I'm sorry this is a completely noob post, but I am happy I found you guys on the net!

I'm from Vancouver, Canada, looking to purchase a green laser for under $50.

Without getting too technical, I want the most powerful laser I can get for under $50 (I'm assuming green laser would be best).

I want to use it mostly at nighttime for pointing at the stars, or into our fields/mountains overlooking our backyard (~5 miles clear sight).

What do you guys suggest I purchase, and from where?

Thanks again!!

I, too, am a noob. Spent several months reading here. One deal that flushed up is this one here from focalprice.

50mW 532nm Green Laser Pointer (Black)
Welcome to focalprice.com | The lowest Price for DS R4 lite,PSP Slim,Genuine Earphone,SONY EX71 EX082

It is *NOT* the most powerful one you can get but is actually a real 50mw green laser for $15. I got one based on the reviews here as well as on the FP site (they appeared NOT to be "ringer reviews" so I gave them some credence) and was not disappointed. Using my LaserBee USB meter, the unit metered out at 50mw (approx) which merits out the comments made elsewhere.

There is a review of this laser on this site here: http://laserpointerforums.com/f52/focalprice-50mw-532nm-lp115b-57896.html

I recommend you look at this laser seriously as a good starting point. While you are at it, if you order it, pick up a couple of these goggles:

Protective Blue Laser Safety Glasses Goggles (Green)
Laser Promotion Professional Anti Green Laser Glassess

They are not top notch safety glasses and there are better ones out there, but having safety gear is better than NOT having it. I'm in the process of testing them out to see how much they drop the output of the lasers, but need an IR filter to do an effective test. My LaserBee test with these red glasses dropped my LP115's output from 47mW to 27mW which is not a lot but would be right if the LP115 was putting out a lot of IR (hence the need for the IR filter to see if this is so).

If anyone else feels I have given bad info or bad advice, please let me know and I'll edit/remove the inaccurate or inappropriate info.

Jlovell999: That's a pretty impressive first post. You accidentally posted it twice, so just delete one and it's all good.

To the OP: My personal recommendation is the 50mW from Budgetgadgets, there's a link to the review in my signature, and that review includes a video. The Divergence is phenominal, so hitting those mountains should be no problem. Just be considerate of any houses.

If you have an extra $10 (You said $50, and the laser is only $30), I'd recommend a pair of these Goggles: Protection Glasses for 532nm Green Laser
You probably won't need to use them all the time with the 50mW laser, but they'll be really good to have just in case, especially if you go on to buy more powerful lasers in the future.

Well of course, it depends on what country you live in. If you live in the United States, you are going to be limited to 5mW power. If you do anymore, there is a big chance it will be confiscated in Customs. If you live anywhere else but the U.S and Austraila. You can get whatever power you want. I would suggest Deal Extreme because the prices are great. Now when purchasing there, if a laser is labelled 200mw, Expect about 160mW average. But everything is affordable and for $50. This link below has good review's.:D 200mW Green Laser Pointer Pen Black - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

My tip goes to 5-in-1 200mw 532nm Open-back Star-projected Green Laser Pointer Pen (2×AAA) from Dinodirect at US$39.

I have one, it's actually 180mW including 22mW of infrared(>950nm). Its beam is much brighter than 50mW. Good power, low divergence and good dot. I can reach a limestone quarry 2.5km far from home, and see the dot on clouds somedays.

You'll must be lucky when you buy from Dinodirect. Their delivery is faster than DX and their packaging is much better also(you won't receive broken stuff as allways from DX). BUT..... if for some reason you need their customer support (defective, wrong item, etc), you'll have to be VERY patient.

EDIT: Another good option from DD: 150mw 532nm Open-back Green Laser Pointer with Keychain(Ligniting matches). I also have one of this. It's 131mW including 20mW infrared. The advantage is it's portability, but it has bad divergence. It's ok if you don't matter for pointing things too far. If you got one of this, buy also a charger and spare battery (10440).

No disrespect, but I've never heard of a laser being confiscated by U.S. Customs, and find it EXTREMELY unlikely that will happen to you (OR the OP, for that matter) if you order a <5mW laser.

None taken, but DX has just recently told me that they will not even send it out to me, because of the risk of it being confiscated. Which I find quite odd, since i bought it, they didn't. Any-who, Some of my buddies laser's have been confiscated, but they were over 500mw's. So I could see why. Its just the luck of the draw i suppose. I think that they go through X-Ray scanner's to see what's inside, and they look an awful lot like Flashlight's, so i'm sure several slide few undetected. I just made an order of 3, 5mw laser's at DX, and they said that custom's will confiscate it, so i will have to sweet talk them into shipping it to me. lol:banghead:

DX is a pretty bad site in my opinion, because buying from them is a lottery (you never know what you'll get). I'd recommend buying from O-like or BudgetGadgets, Rayfoss, or other websites. There's dozens of good and bad ones out there. Here's a guide to help you get to know which sites to trust and which to forget about: http://laserpointerforums.com/f45/guide-buying-your-first-green-laser-30608.html

Thanks, I have looked at it before though. I am a little nervous now, since i bought quite a few things there, i also bought a 100mw 405nm module, im really hoping that makes it here, because i have plans to put it in a 5mw 405nm skeleton(or Casing, or whatever you would call it) I have been trying to come up with something original or special, that nobody has tried before, but havnt seem to figured it out yet. lol, Have you ever done any DIY projects?

Nope. I am the WRONG person to be asking about the technical side of things, haha. Sorry, bud. I bet if you start a thread in the DIY forum, you'll find lots of help.

People have no right to tell you you're posting too much, unless your posts are spam or noncontributing comments like "That's cool." I'm not about to search your post history to find out, but I wouldn't let them bully you into keeping your mouth shut when you have legitimate questions to ask.

(Remember to always search for an answer before asking the question, though!)
