Ready to use? Or just component?

Hi, I live in Australia so basically I'm restricted to a DIY laser. I found this thing on ebay and was wondering whether it just requires a case and two AAA's or whether its missing essential components. Oh and if anyone knows what the chances of this going through customs is. Thanks

"Operating Voltage 2.9V to 3V " - that's a pair of AAA's for you right there. Assuming its regulated in some way, you should be good to go. I'm guessing that board provides some shoddy excuse for regulation for your batts, but probably good enough for you to get a decent lifetime out of it as-is in any case.

You can get that through customs, but if I recall correctly posession is illegal if you convert it into a battery operated pointer. All bare modules / mains powered laser systems are fine though.

You will require some sort of enclosure to put everything in, torches or plastic project boxes work fine ... you'll probably want a heatsink for it, and some sort of power supply. Batteries or power from a wallwart will do the job so long as you can meet the specified voltage and current ratings.

Doesn't look like it has a great driver - maybe you want to do a DIY build and get more power out of it , with a better driver? Wouldn't cost you much more ... someone on these forums might even be able to hook you up with a complete module for a nice price!!

Also, 405nm is not at all bright and most people have a hard time focusing on it ... if you are going for brightness you'll want green. 405nm is violet not blue, that's a common misconception brought on by false marketing.
