LASERS NEWS

Laser Pointer Safety - Tax on handheld lasers and pointers

we should have expected something like this would happen.:yabbem:

edit-- its only a proposal-- and maybe not one that is do-able.
I still say we all need to do as much as possible to lower the number o incidents, as I dont see anyone else willing to do much in the way of prevention.

I, for one, would welcome some form of permit to own lasers. That way anyone having no permit could lose thier laser , at least until they applied for one and demonstrated thier knowledge in safe laser use.

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

Wow.
a) I doubt the Chinese will follow this.
b) the x-140s would not be subject to this because they are projectors, so this tax could be avoid by extracting you own diodes
c) if I pay for a 5mw laser and pay $25 tax, but the laser is underspec, what happens now, will everyone have to have a LPM?

also, will diodes alone be subject to this?

Thank goodness for DIY builds. :undecided:

wait.... what are the actual odds of this happening?
is this just some site that has an idea?

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

The name at the bottom of this (more or less just a proposal) is that of the head guy at ILDA IIRC.

dont read more into it than just that-- an opinion and a suggested solution of the growing problem cause by idiots with handhelds. We all need to double down efforts to do what we can to stop these fools doing the lasing. my 2 centavos...hak

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

It's an interesting idea to be sure.

However, illegal lasers fly under customs' radar pretty routinely - if this continued happening, could the tax be applied?

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

also the outlaws with guns VS the outlawed guns argument comes to mind.

I would never lase an aircraft/ cop car etc. unless you put a gun to my head ---but thats just me.

IMHO more would be accomplished and faster if anyone doing anything stupid with his (or her) laser got jailed AND fined and thier laser taken away forever.

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

Smells like the old government Cigarette and Gasoline tax game
much more than reducing Laser/aircraft incidences....

This is a very good point, I need not discuss it more than that for those in the know, perhaps not just the Chines, but any other mass producing countries.

Law does not govern Economics, Economics governs Law.(welcome to 1984;))

Too many problems with this approach for it to ever work.

Ultimately making harsh examples of people who do abuse lasers will do a lot more than taxation policies that will be ignored by economics.

@lasersbee - yes it does smell that way. Can't wait for the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Lasers.

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

Well considering that the only handheld laser I've ever bought completely built (excluding a few random dollar store reds) was a 5mw 405 for a gift... This really wont affect me.

Also I doubt that many of the Chinese sites will comply. Maybe dx as it seems to be on the FDA's radar, but not much else. I also doubt they will be able to tax every eBay laser, especially if they are stated as just a couple mw like IQS.

The sellers could even get creatively selling very low power lasers with an easy access pot and in the description say something like "utilizes an A140 diode capable of >1W output" anybody who knew what they were doing would get the idea.

Really the idea of taxing based on power is completely unpheasable.

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

The only thing I liked while reading this was
"800 mW (typical Wicked Lasers Spyder III Arctic)"

But this seems a bit radical. Also, what would we do about those 300w industrial CO2 lasers? By their logic that'd be just over $1,500,000.
EDIT: just reread that it was only to be applied to handhelds. Well, we'll all use labbies then and use mirrors.
Herp derp.

Hmm, wonder how they would deal with something shoulder mounted:eg:

Fenzir

did you miss the part about handhelds- this idea from Mr. Murphy is about handhelds not labbies or Co2 etc.
The photo of the 15mW DPSS 532 labby looks very familiar. I have four of those.

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

Sooooo? Who wants to buy my arctic for 4300 bucks?? Lol. J/k
That is a crazy tax law!!!
