unless they change the technology, you will always have lasers.

^ fallout, anyone ? :p :D

(BTW, if they're not solid resin, the first one can be a discrete host, for a working ND:YAG unit ..... uhm, wondering if my ER:YAG cavity can be placed inside it, too  ..... :p)

Wow, this would make Wannaburns 3.5W laser $17,500 in tax

If you mean the guns, I think they're replicas of guns from the 'fallout' games that somebody made.

Possibly. But does it really matter? People actually make stuff like this regularly.

The government is not selling Cigarettes or Gasoline....
and they still gouge their taxes right out of the consumer's
pockets...

To implement this Laser Tax it would take many...many
years if they would do it at all... IMO

Either way... I'm not worried....

Jerry

I was making a general statement. The government gets their cut from everything sold in a retail/commercial situation. Its the only way they could put a tax on lasers. The FDA would never let that happen.

Re: READ AND HEED--this will effect all.

Surely, (and don't call me Shirley!), the drive for any government setting up to tax any enterprise would be the revenue they could generate. What is the annual turnover spent on handheld lasers and what sort of revenue could actually be gained from it? There must be some US based figures that someone better than I can seek out maybe? Just for kicks at least... That would surely, (I told you, don't call me Shirley!), give a good empirical idea on whether or not it was likely to happen or not. I shouldn't really care as I'm in the UK but these things have a habit of crossing the pond!

its only a proposal-- and maybe not one that is do-able.
I still say we all need to do as much as possible to lower the number of incidents, as I dont see anyone else willing to do much in the way of prevention.

I, for one, would welcome some form of permit to own lasers. That way anyone having no permit could lose thier laser , at least until they applied for one and demonstrated thier knowledge in safe laser use.
^^^
The above was also added to my OP but felt having it said here too was more important than breaking the double posting rule--

^^^Agreed. I wouldn't mind taking a short test, and paying for a permit, if it also offered some level of protection from overzealous cops.

As far as preventing incidents, the only effective approach to getting people to do the right thing, is unfortunately the threat of severe consequences.

The 11k faa fine is a nice start IMO. Some mandatory prison time wouldn't be a bad idea either.
