Bear with me please.

I work for a state agency looking into the use of lasers as a bird deterrent. I have researched this, and it is a fairly new concept. There are a few bird deterring particular lasers, but they range in price from $500 to $10.5K! We would like to test a smaller more handheld version at a lower price before committing to such expenses (keeping in mind of course that these may not work as well, but if we see any form of deterrence we will assume the more expensive products will work).

Question 1: Many of the laser products seem to come from outside the states. This is difficult to get a purchase order for given we are a state agency. Is there any place to purchase lasers in the US?

Question 2: Most of the research has pointed to the green, 532nm, laser as being the most effective. It seems the 5mW laser is the only legal purchasable laser? Is that correct? If not, I noticed that LaserPointerPro.com can go up to 10,000mW, but their prices seem awfully low for laser pointers higher than the 5mW range, making me question whether this is a valid place to order from (not to mention it doesn't say where the laser is being shipped from).

Question 3: We would be mostly working during the day, so we would need a laser powerful enough to see a decent spot (not necessarily the beam) on the ground at distances up to 100 yards max (but most would be about 50 yards or less). We may try this both early morning/late evening, or midday, so what would the power necessary to do that?

Question 4: Are there any lasers/attachments we could use which would allow us to adjust the beam/spot width? It seems the more expensive bird specific lasers use a wide beam, and I fear we may not receive any response from a spot too small.

Think that is all the questions I have today, but if there are any other questions you think I should be asking, please feel free to inform me. And thank you all in advance.

I'm not sure if I recommend for you to use a laser against an animal as all of us here are thoroughly against shining a laser into the eyes of anyone or any animal.

1. One of the more senior members can probably help you with obtaining a laser from within the states. I usually just make my own.

2. The green wavelength is the wavelength that the human eye can see with the most ease. To a bird or other animal, I'm not sure if this would work as well because their eyes are structured differently than ours. But I'm no aviary scientist so I couldn't tell you for sure.

3. Most lasers could easily do that. I know that many of my cheap ebay lasers can do it with ease.

4. Many lasers that you will see for sale are actually more than 5mW. They are just labelled as 5mW so that they can be easily sold throughout the U.S.

If you really want a high powered laser you could definitely ask a member around here to make one for you. I'm sure someone would gladly step up to the plate and make you a nice one. Just hold in mind that high powered lasers, especially green ones, are not cheap.

Also I recommend that you buy a pair of safety glasses because eye damage is no joke. Higher powered lasers can and will destroy your eyeballs if the dot hits them. I hope you're able to find what you're looking for here. Have a nice day! :)
