I'm planning to build a laser with a MXDL 5W Lumileds CR123A 6V Flashlight...
However I noticed that the flashlight doesn't use AA or AAA batteries. I looked up the price for the RCR123A batteries and they are pretty pricey. Would there be away to modify the flashlight so it will use AA batteries?

You want to use RCR123A's They are rechargeable. If you figure up what you spend on primary batteries Vs. rechargeable, it works out in the long run.
The RCR123A's provide more power and run-time then AAA's.
If you like the host, don't let the batteries hold you back.
Spend $7-8 dollars on battery's now, or spend $50 in the long run.

Rechargeable CR123 batteries are available from DX at a very modest price; generally $3-5 a pair...
