possibility of eye damage?

My brother recently bought for our children two green laser pens from "DragonLaser". They were both the Viper Series "125mW". Our family are big Star Wars fans and our kids loved to pretend to be Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader and duel with the laser pens. Recently they have been complaining of strange eye issues though. One says he sees black dots in his vision and the other says he has a 'blob in his eyes'. I have set up an appointment for them at an optometrist. Could it be reasonable to think that the laser pen could be the cause of this?

Absolutely, such a laser is NOT a toy, and can blind you very quickly.

This is so very sad that lack of proper information is going to result in permanent eye damage in children.

The activity you described here would certainly allow for direct eye exposure to the beam.

I hope and pray these children will not go blind as a result of this "play"

What a tragedy this is...

It would have been safer to give them swords to dual with, at least cuts heal.

Must we always assume that someone asking for the opinions or help of the members here is a troll???

Lets just assume for a minute that this is a genuine father who is concerned about this and went to google searching for laser info and found this forum.

So everyone starts tossing rotten tomatoes at the OP and the information this person seeks gets mired in the slew of "go away troll" posts.

Try and stay objective for a moment.(please)

This could certainly be a cause for eye damage. The best thing to do would be to not allow them to use their lasers anymore, then go to the optometrist and see what he/she says. If there is no damage then get your kids some laser goggles in order to protect them from future damage, ensure that they wear them at all times when operating the lasers.

If there is any damage there is little chance of it healing, but the brain can often compensate for the damage and there usually is some improvement in sight.

I'm sorry but this post is perfect troll material. I don't "always" assume that someone asking for help is a troll and I don't know who does. What behaviour I do suspect as a troll however, is someone who posts something so blatantly irresponsible that it would make every member here cringe (after all, that's what trolls aim to do). Fair enough, this post might be legitimate and the user might have serious concern (if that is the case I apologize), which is why I gave an actual answer to the question regardless of my suspicions.

It could well be a troll - but until proven otherwise we must assume that this is a real situation. There are plenty of people who would allow something like this to happen - there are 6.8 billion people on this planet, and trust me there are PLENTY of idiots. ;)

this story seems very strange ... only a person with minimum informations on lasers known sites such as DL and also knows that the laser pointers should not be used in this way. I agree with Photonaholic because it is always right to help those who ask but it is very likely that this new user is a troll.

There are a ton of people who could care less about lasers period. Yet alone educate themselves about them.

Not any different than the people who chop up harmless garter snakes with a shovel, just because they don't understand or want to understand.

I just hope I didn't read what I just did read. Oh god...

The 125mw Viper from DragonLasers is well enough strong to cause permanent eye damage, for sure. Even with a split second of exposure (faster than the eye can react and blink). As said before, these lasers are no toys and should be handeld with great care.
And playing starwars? Once again, oh god. Please tell me you are trolling the forums.

It's when people come up with these kind of things I usualy want to say "Screenshot or didn't happen". Bit hard to do that in this case tho.



@ Arayan, I bought my first viper 75mw from DL without any kind of knowledge around lasers what so ever. So yes, you can find sites like that.

I have thought about this one, don't these lasers have stickers on them warning about direct exposure??

is there little warning slips in the packaging??

I'm just trying to conceive WHY

This would never happen. Kids who wanna play Luke -vs- Darth would never wear something that prevents them from seeing the beam! Might as well tell them to play without the batteries installed. If this is a true story, it's better to take away the lasers and tell Uncle Dumas to keep them until these guys are older.

I agree this appears to be BS (troll), though.

Those capped words should have been in a larger font, but if i quote them, then they'll be twice as many, so the larger font is unneeded.
