Polarity inversion with Hercules 700 ;(

Hi to all.
While operating with my Hercules 700 I have accidentally installed three powerful Tenergy 10.000 mAh batteries with the polarity inverted!
The key switch was off, the jack plug not connected and the power button in OFF mode (so the circuit was open three times, no current flow and no tension), but after about 5 seconds from the battery insertion, I sensed a smell like a burnt electronics!
I have immediatly reversed the batteries, and tried the laser ... well everything seems to works fine, with the same intensity and power, but now the fan of the Hercules throw out warm air with a little amount of the original burnt smell.
So, what might have happened? What could be damaged? A resistor? A tin soldering? A piece of bakelite or glass fiber? A small amount of glue? There is some kind of polarity inversion protection in that device?
I'm afraid thinking that some internal resistance value could be altered, and now the diode could be under stress. I cannot risk a so expensive item, please help me, thanks a lot!
