For me the perfect portable laser would be completly sealed all brass internals annodized external alluminium. Lithium battery that could be user replaced if need be, charged by an inductive charger. 3 power settings with 3 tiny l.e.d.'s showing power setting and doubling as battery state indicators. Not sure which color I'd choose but no matter it's just a dream anyway. Power would be microprocessor controlled with different modes like some of those fancy L.e.d. flashlights

Mine would be a waterproof RGB with a total output around 500 to 750mW. I would want it to use 2 to 3 rechargable lithium ion batteries around the size of D cells for plenty of capacity. I would also want to be able to adjust the color to any color I want manually and have a usb connection to have a computer control it if I wanted to.

what the heck are you talking about!!

the perfect laser would be a black laser which projected a shadow with the shape of Chuck Norris, so everyone thinks he is gonna roundhouse kick them in the face.

but now, for the perfect real laser.....an RGB copper case 2W portable with potentiometers to vary the colors, built-in micromotors that create a liquid sky/spirograph and nanotubes heat based batteries. :D

i hope that laser gets produced during my lifetime :p

10kw RGB with built in nuclear reactor(for like 10 years operation), computer controlled if needed, waterproof, shockproof, pot's to vary the colours, and shockproof! All for $20 !!!!!

i change mine.i want it in a sonar burner case but the size of a cni laser. It can las at every wavelength and including uv ,x-ray ,grammar ray. After preesing the button but before lasing it would calculate where the dot will be and not on if it goes to some ones eyes.It would have tec in it to cool it and it won't one unless the is body heat on it.The tec would tell for that.It could be any output i want.I could connect it to a computer.Batteries would newer run out.The lens would clean automatically. It has a life time warranty. Its free.(note to self: stop day dreaming).

Mine would have completely adjustable wavelength and output power from 0.01mW to 1 GazillionW (Or failing that, 1 Watt, as that seems to be the max in a handheld) :D

Not sure which, but I'd take one of the Wicked cases too. They have pretty lasers :)

HAHAHAHAHAH
GRAMMAR RAY

ahahaha omg....

murudai, you can choose Yottawatts ;)

of course, things, my perfect one should be waterproof, shockproof.....but it'll never be Chuck-proof!!

and.....20 dollars ARE YOU CRAZY???....i want it for free!! :D:D [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Hmm, I'll try to make this a bit realistic.
I would want a 500mW blue laser. (not DPSS, but an actual blue diode to avoid all the mode hopping problems and the risk of dropping it and getting all the crystals out of alignment) It would be focusable with a boost circuit so that it could be powered by small batteries, it would use little solar panels that could catch most of the sunlight to recharge a couple of lithium batteries with a huge mAh rating so they could last a long time without having to bring the laser out in the sunlight again to recharge them. Also, a built in photo diode with a circuit and a display so I could know exactly how many mW the laser was putting out. And I guess I would want it to cost no more than 400 bucks, and that it would come with a 2 year warranty. (this might come true in a couple of decades)

Good idea.
I also want it to charge the batteries externally (you don't have the take out the batteries, it just charges like your phone) I'd have it at an output of 5W though for overkill's sake. I'd like it to have a super shot that lasts for half a second but puts out 100W. It'd also wipe my ass and flush for me when I went to the bathroom.

Mine would be a UV laser @ enough watts so
you can "draw" on tile coated buildings from
a mile away with a hand held laser.

Mine would be a 5watt white portable laser in the current sonar II case. Realistically I want to see affordable yellow/blue/green laser diodes.

I wonder why no one specified 0 divergence on theirs... ::)

Anyway, as far as real , do-able lasers go , I'd go for a 5W IR handheld with a built in well designed beam expander with Zeiss optics.A small copper heatsink on the diode with 3 TECs in a triangle , then another big round copper heatsink with a triangle socket(for the diode assembly to slide in) all housed in a stainless steel housing using a Li-Po battery pack. And to for it not to look like a baseball bat I would make it gun-shaped, with a safety key switch and of course an automatic aperture shuter(whenever you release the switch , it closes to protect expensive zeiss optics :D)

Without being too unrealistic:
I'd want a 100kW+ NIR laser in an M16-look alike body. It would have a 200mW green with 0.2mRad divergence for targeting during the day, and a 200mW red with 0.2mRad divergence for targeting at night. The kW laser would be fired in three second pulses, and the focus would auto adjust to the target either the red or green laser is pointing at. It would be waterproof and one battery charge would be good for at least 20 shots. It would have an indicator that warns in case of overheating, and in that case you can just dunk it in water to keep it cool (if the TECs and heatsinking don't provide enough cooling). The butt of the rifle would have Chuck Norris' face on it and it would have a sensor that detects babies within effective range of the rifle.
