So I'm finally going to be ordering a 50mw "cute" green laser from O-like ( New cute pocket Green laser 50mW /adjustable [OLCGL50] - $34.99 : Welcome to O-Like.com, Your source for laser products ) and have a few quick Q's...

Are safety goggles really needed? I'm not stupid with lasers, meaning I won't use the thing indoors or use it irresponsibly outdoors, but then again, we only get one set of eyes ;)

What exactly is "mode hopping" in laymens terms? Is it bad or good and would I have to worry about it with this laser?

How fast would shipping be from o-like to me (Northeastern U.S.)?

Thanks,

maxx

That's not too bad coming from China. I usually use EMS to order my stuff but I chose the cheap option anyway. I'm in no rush (I have a 5mw to hold me off until I get it ;))

What should I expect from this laser? I'm used to a 5mw that has a slightly visible green beam at night and doesn't work for sh!t in cold temperatures (like now in my basement, using my Zippo to warm it up slightly/using laptop fan air)

I got the 200mw 650nm waterproof. I dont know how to link it sorry. but i love it. solid host. burns great. nice beam. i think you will be very impressed with yours. now i want to get a nice 445 but the o-like 400mw 445nm has the same host. im looking for a nice 445 in a different host.

You don't really NEED glasses for such laser. Also you will not enjoy it with glasses, as you would probably not primarily burn with it, and you want watch beam and point at distant things.
On the other hand, there still is some risk involved, and the glasses of course would help. Actually I only use glasses with my class IV laser (1.5W 445nm).

As for mode hopping, it means the dot will wiggle a bit, and won't be as round and tight as it could be. But it's more problem with stronger green lasers (my 400mW does that), I haven't seen it on 50mW. These weak lasers use thin crystals, which eliminates the extra modes IMHO.

Have you got that laser yet? Im ordering the same one here pretty soon. If so how is it and do you think it would be a wise idea to order some glasses with it?

If you're gonna use it inside, and possible look at the dot from up close, invest in goggles...

If you're gonna use only outside, and not stare at the dot, being careful, you'll probably be fine without goggles.
