Ooooh shinny 2x 10440 host (pic heavy)

In the "What host do you think looks snazzy?" thread (I re-arranged the title name most know the one I'm talking about) I had suggested the Icon Solo flash light Icon Solo Pen Light 2-AAA Gray, and some folks questioned it possibly since there was only the one pic and not much info on the host well I got one with my light hounds order and botched up the dis-assembly since they glued the upper part of the host to the battery portion, then I got a second one today and tried some more careful methods of dis-assembly, and finally got it all apart and in pristine shape, so to provide a little more info for any whom where curious.

I've eyeballed that host a few times on that site, I like it:)!

I found out Radioshack has them for the same price, could save on shipping, just have to becareful of the upper section its glued pretty tight, I tried to use the ultra sonic cleaner with hot tap water but all it seemed to do was undo teh glue on the clip since theres a rubber or silicon gasket, also tried acetone, and basicly torching the upper part to loosen teh glue, plus you kinda need to dremel out the lens and remove the reflector.

I personaly think it was due to heating the glue till loosened up.

However if you want to try it on something PM and I'll see what I can do.

I didn't have a torch on hand so I used the gas stove top set to 10 and only a few seconds at a couple different locations where the threads where, rinsed in since to cool it off and tried to turn it by hand, once I started getting it to turn hand I just kept working it, turn it till it stopped turn back do that a few times re-heat and cool then rinse and repeat.

Oh yea I'd high advise AGAINST using any sort of wrenchs pliers or clamps to assist in turning, since the metal is only 2mm thick you'll colapse the tube and you'll be screwed, trust me, the host I tried I went ape sh!t on collapsed the tail cap area.

Also A little later today I'll get teh mass of upper end of the host where the aixiz mod will go.

Update: So I got some numbers for the purpose of figuring up how powerful of a laser one could make this into, for comparison purposes I also measured my Survival laser 1W blue, and my "5mW" green pen:

The green pen (just the laser module upper host and driver) have a mass of 33g and takes about 3-5minutes to sort of notice a tempurature difference on the host where the laser is.

The BSL 1W has a mass of 40g (pill/heatsink/moh's focus knob/diode/ aixiz module and upper host) and takes 45secs to become noticably warm to the touch at room temp.

The Icon solo upper part with diode and aixiz module has a mass of 25g.

I could use more numbers but if I had to take a guess I'd say 500mW would get you 1 -2 minutes of runtime before the upper part of the host would become warm to the touch.

You also have to keep in mind the batteries your dealing with. Which in this case would likely be 2x 10440's in series, so you really only have 8.4v @ 350mAh (fully charged) to work with.

I know the little 1x 10440 ef23 trustfire 445 I have runs at around 400mW at full power.. However it'll only do it for a minute or two before it's down to 300mW.

In general, AAA based hosts are *not* good for high power builds unless your happy with sub 20 minute total runtimes between battery recharges.

Thats why I got one Qume, I already have a 1W 445, but its bulky hence why I got a 2 x 10440 host, I was just putting out the guess-timate incase someone else wnated to use this host for a One-Shot wonder, Haha besides....I have yet to decide what color I'm even gonna use, it would be nice to have one that looks cool but also is able to perfom both the point functionality and the "Oh? you need a light? Here let me use my laser to light your sig.":evil:

Ah. That's basically what I use the little trustfire for, but with it, I ended up just using the stock LED driver it came with, so it has modes. It does around 400mW on a fully charged 10440 and around 50mW in low mode.. where it stays most of the time. It's a boost driver so it'll also run off a single AAA. With a good quality one it'll do around 60mW on high and around 10 on low.

I think this pic was before I got any 10440's, so it's doing 60mw or so.

appreciate the offer helios, but at the front of the upper part I bet theres less then 1mm of space, and in the back theres at best 2mm but more like 1mm, and as Qume said at best I'd only get <400mw with using 10440s, and there is 0 room for a driver other then one that could fit into the aixiz module.

Snazzy Qumme, I figure I got one that can house 2 cells so I'll avoid a booster....still though its driving me insane, I have no idea what color to do, I'd prefer to stay away from RGB but that basicly covers everything.:cryyy:

If you use a linear driver and 2 10440s you can get more because it doesnt need to draw extra current to boost voltage. Also why does it have to be 445nm?

Heh. 405, 445, 532 (with creativity) or one of the reds (635-685) depending on your budget) are about your only real color options. Other DPSS modules, when available. (473 is about the only other 'diy' module available) are going to be a lot bigger in diameter than a AAA host.

I'm in for Red Green or Blue since I hace 1 of each of those colors, and I'm more inclined to something that runs closer to 7.4V, for example 445 suposedly runs at 4.5-5v and 405s run around at 5.5-6v otherwise I'll need to use a buck converter to drop the voltage and gain some amperage, or use only 1 cell, neither one is an idea I like.

Um. That's the whole point of having a driver. To match input sources with what current/voltage your diode wants.

Sounds to me like your wanting to direct-drive.. Which is a big no no for the most part and will only lead to dead diodes.

Having 7.4v (nominal) to work with means you can just use a linear driver and use whatever diode you choose.. And there are only two types of drivers. Boost and buck. What makes you think you don't want to use a buck driver like a linear regulator? Something like Jib's linear driver will be perfect for this.
