Objects to shine a green laser through?

Hi,

I just took delivery of my first green laser, and was wondering what items i could shine it through for cool effects. I have a few faceted crystals that are cool, but if anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful. Cheap and cheerful is best.

Also, i saw a clip oh youtube that claimed the laser was being shone through a pair of the saftey goggles and it was producing a constantly moving 'cloud' effect, it looked very very cool. Is this genuine? and can any other material be used to produce a similar effect?

That is the laser burning the glasses' plastic and making different shapes because of reflection. You can try that with almost any piece of plastic (that you can burn). Be careful with reflections!!


A cool thing is fluorescence: Go get an orange fluorescent marker, break the body and get the core with the dye. Get a glass of water and fill it with 150cm^3 of water so it doesn't get too dilluted. Now put the marker's core into the water and press on it until you get all the dye out and mixed with the water. Now shine your green laser at it and see what it looks like :)

Be careful of direct reflections, But don't be afraid to experiment.

If your laser is a "normal" (<5mw) then reflections are not AS bad.

Get a diffraction grating. Lots of fun. I think Dragon Lasers sell them.

Shining throw a bubble blow window with foam, gives a nice digital 'flower'' at the wall.
Shining on a cd gives nice multi beams :D

Get a <5mw laser if you want to play around like this. Beams will reflect and refract unpredictably from irregularly shaped objects. Redirected beams from high powered lasers can easily blind you.

any textured glass- like sliding shower door/curtain- plastic lens from flouresent lights-fiber optic lamp 'threads'-also go to a glass shop - they have small size pieces of sample glass and many work great. only limit is your imagination. have fun--hak

Those are cool. I'm sure they would create a nice 3d effect. (well 3d too 2d conversion anyway).

Not only the orange dye, experiment with all fluorescent colors, they all give cool effects!
