About 10 years ago I experimented with a lava lamp style laser projector. It used a blob of mineral oil suspended in a rubbing alcohol solution. All stuff that can be found in most drug stores. When the bubbles were gently heated interesting patterns were projected by shining a laser through the bottle - pictures below.
