If you're looking for a laser to mount on a rifle, then I will assume you want to be able to "zero" the dot of the laser so it coincides with your sights and bullet trajectory. -That is, you want the dot of the laser to appear exactly where the bullet is going to hit.

In order to "zero" the laser, it will need to be adjustable for elevation and windage (just like a normal sight or scope).
To be able to do this, it requires a specially made housing with angle adjustment screws that can incrementaly move the beam up and down and left and right. -very few lasers have this ability built in.

What you will want to do (and believe me, this will save you a ton of frustration) is buy a ready made laser sight, built specifically for this purpose. This company has been around since the begining and is well respected for making a quality product:

Good luck.

If you don't already have a scope mount on the rifle (to attach the laser to), here's one special made for the laser:

what sort of rifle is it?

That's a good question. Lasersights aren't normally used on long range or hunting rifles. They're usually used on pistols, shotguns and submachine guns for fast acquisition or "snap' shooting.

"Did you hear the one about the Iraqi sniper who used a green lasersight?"
His last thought was "How did the American dogs find my tree hide so quickly?"
