Is he the new Kipkay?

I admit that I don't know everything about lasers but I'm pretty certain putting 8 5W lasers in parallel does not equal 1 40W laser but i could be wrong. Why would anyone build this and then brag about it on youtube saying "There is no, no good reason for anyone to own something this powerful but because was not illegal for me to build I decided to build it anyways." Its people like this guy who will introduce more idiots into our hobby and destroy the freedom we have with lasers.

Well, this guy is a very well respected member on the forums here, and he is certainly not a "new KipKay". If you have watched his older videos, he actually talks about safety glasses, and he helps people build lasers the right way (not a laser diode in series with a risistor). And 8*5 does equal 40, or am I being crazy? He doesn't do this stuff to get a ton of views, but only because he likes to entertain people.

It doesn't equal one 40 watt beam, but it is still a 40 watt laser, just with multiple beams.

This is the 5th thread about him since that video came out. Within another 4 years I expect he will have his PHD in physics and I wouldn't be surprised if he goes on to win a Nobel prize one day. A few members here are already working on building lasers using the same 8 diode array, a smaller hand held laser, no need to worry about idiots building these though because they cost about $1000 to build one. Though I do hope people don't go posting too many videos of them.

There is a massive difference between Styropyro and Kipkay. Kipkay is a fool with total disregard for safety; his only concern is popularity. Styropyro is a true master of laser safety, and his motto is indeed "Always protect your seeing balls!".

Isnt StyroPyro doing a group buy for these arrays in the GB section?
And RHD an enclosure and driver for them i think.

Alright, I want you to watch some of kipkay's vids as well as some other similar channels and then watch some of my vids. Do you see my lack of product placement and description advertising BS? Sure I have Google ads, but honestly the majority of that goes right back to lasers. I am making a SMALL FRACTION of what youtubers who sell out are making.

Why am I saying this? It's because I mean it when I say that my goal as a video maker is to inspire some bright kids to consider a career in science. I know myself that school did not inspire my love of science, but it was fun and crazy projects that did. I am going to dedicate my life to science, and part of my hope to contribute is to draw some kids much smarter than me into research so they can build amazing things.

Don't compare me to kipkay. Yes I am an entertainer, but I have different motives.

PS: I have denied many TV appearances solely for the fear that the media would paint us in a bad name!

I think you are an amazing inspiration to many people, including me. I have been interested in science since I was like 4, but I know a lot of people that don't know anything about it, but when I start talking to them about science, they really seem to enjoy it. The way you talk about science stuff makes me, and others, want to learn more about science, and I am sure that this can only be a good thing. Keep doing what you are doing! +rep

huh? That sounds like you passed out on an incredible chance to do just the opposite. You think YouTube is a better platform to inform the public than national TV?

Yes. They will record an entire interview and cut and paste certain segments to take what you say completely out of context. It's called an Agenda.

Hahaha yeah everything is cut to fit time slots but to completely butcher someone's "interview" or whatever is a bit far stretched. What agenda?? This isn't political!

P.S. stop watching Fux News :)

Someone once mentioned me as a possible Kipkay when I claimed to be able to easily make a $5 laser pen focus-able. I was admittedly very angry about it and wrote my tutorial showing every step and have since written others. Just threw up some LPC-826 builds this morning more to give others the incentive to try things than anything else. I have never posted my stuff anywhere else but here. Have always encouraged others to step out of the box and figure things out.
I was a Nuclear Reactor Operator for 10 years in the US Navy but had always loved science and as Styro said it was actually outside the classroom that made me interested in it.
Do I have some of the same concerns that others have about the 40W monster? Yes and I've voiced them. I also would like to make one but I don't have the resources ($) to go about it so I try not to think about it. For me it's mostly about the build and not the end product. Kind of feels like a letdown when I finish a build. Just another unit to stick in a case and on to the next.

I'd say he did the right thing. In case you haven't noticed, the media is out to make people think lasers are weapons, and that high powered lasers serve no other purpose other than to create chaos and hurt people. There has to be a reason for this. Styro would have undoubtedly been vilified in one way or another, no matter what news channel you watch.

Sorry I didn't know the media was out to make people think lasers are weapons. What news network have you been watching that you see this?

Sounds like a bit of paranoia more than anything. I still say a opportunity was passed over because I don't believe "everyone" is out to get us.
