Ok, I'm totally geeked. I've made sales to government agencies around the world. In the U.S. the list is extensive from the NIH, NIST, NASA, Army, Navy, AF, to Sandia, Oak Ridge, Berkeley, Los Alamos National Labs and a bunch of defense contractors but today tops the list. About the only people who would understand are you guys as my wife would give me a blank stare and ask where is the paycheck.

I was contacted by a tactical aircraft manufacturer about building a 7W laser dazzler to be built into their aircraft for dazzling ground targets. This is freakin' cool. We have to build a nice driver system to integrate into their power systems, provide all the fiber coupling to integrate to their gimbal optics and put it all in an industrial military style modular system. I'm am going to get this contract if it kills me!

So, in the near feature, airplanes will shoot back when people aim their laserpointers at them? ;D

Sweet. About how high are these planes gonna fly, from how far will 7W be effective?

Low and slow. Seven watts at 400-600 meters will wreck your day. Even though the collimation will generate a cone to cover a larger area it will be much brighter than looking into the sun. It would be difficult to draw a bead on the aircraft with your AK-47. What would be really cool is if it would scan multiple targets. I don't know the details at that end.

I suppose it doesnt even have to be insanely bright for a dazzling effect at night. As bright as sunlight would more then suffice in such situations.

Laser weaponry powerful enough cause permanent damage to the unaided eye are banned under the Geneva convention, so that would set an upper limit on the final intensity at the target. I'm not sure what the limit in terms of W/m2 is for that, but anything over say 100 mW/cm2 is definitely in (and probably well over) the dangerzone.

Is this tactical aircraft manufacturer from Soviet Russia by any chance? Cause it would make sense that in Soviet Russia , the plane points at YOU! :D :D :D :D :D

If I was to guess which aircraft its going on---> then I would say its the Fairchild A-10 thunderbolt 2 "warthog", flies low and slow to destroy tanks/anything.\

EDIT: maybe even the C-130 gunship.

Hey, you could make 3 of these from each colour and make a laser projector that uses small countries as a screen :eek:

1) It's definitely not an AC-130 gunship. Their attack envelop is a circular left banking pattern at 10,000 feet AGL. And for giggles it's not the A-10 either. A quick burst from their GAU-8A vaporizes small arms threats. Furthermore, the A-10 can take the pain and fly home. I've seen A-10s hit with 23mm anti aircraft fire and small arms with large pieces missing land without incident.

2) As far as Geneva Convention goes, the system cannot be developed with the intent of blinding. There are many battlefield lasers that will blind a person. The man portable designator I used was an Nd:YAG system and would burn your retinas if you took a shot to the eye.

3) It's not the former Soviet Union, or current Soviet Union. I don't see the difference with Putin running the show. He's old school corrupt communist KGB. Furthermore they don't have the money. The gangsters have the money.

Wow, that sounds really awesome.  I'm actually in wonder as of why they haven't done this before.  It's just a basic "flash bomb" sort to speak that will temporally blind anybody who looks at the plane.  That sounds like such a simple method...  is it gonna be DPSS 532nm?  I think that would be the most effective.  Do you have to design the turret as well, or just the laser?  I would think the targeting is the most sophisticated.

Yes it will be 532nm DPSS. And no I don't have to do any of the gimbal systems/optics. I just supply the laser systems and fiber optics to the gimbal. The company has been messing around with the for a bit but now, based on what I was told, want to install it in the aircraft and do some testing. The aircraft in question can make very good use of the system if it's effective.
