Re: New Boost Driver in Dev *Asking for investors*

I probably will have a hard time trusting people with money...

My father invested just under 100,000 dollars in a building project quite a few years ago and our relative still has my fathers money and some other peoples money aswell...

He used to be my uncle, divorced my aunt and left with 500,000 dollars of other people money :/

Goes to show, you cant really trust anyone with money...

They sell these "emergency cell phone chargers" at the dollar store that use a single AA battery to top off your cell phone in a pinch. Anyone know what boost methodology they're using?

Pretty much the same thing we're dealing with here, but the issue here and everywhere else isn't making a boost driver, it's making a boost driver that will source 2A@4.5Vout with a decent efficiency.

Boost drivers that will do say.. 500mA and down, are fairly cheap and easy to construct, relatively speaking.

random question: how do you calculate efficiency?

Re: New Boost Driver in Dev *Asking for investors*

...
The engineer also wants me to pay via Western Union. I have personally never heard of this company... is it legit? Anything I have to look out for (for example do not pay via gift in the case of paypal)

Western Union is non-traceable and loved by Nigerian princes. :(
In this case it just means you will have no hold on him whatsoever.
It would be a really bad idea.

Bobhaha, are you actually meeting this guy in person or just over the phone/e-mail? Any time someone says Western union/bank transfer you should probably run.

I live really close to a Linear technology distribution center (<20 mins.) I called them a few times and got more than the 2 sample pieces they usually give when I had myself convinced that I knew what I was doing.

Later, reality came back and I gave up. But, the guy I was talking to said he knew an engineer who could design a buck driver for me (I was trying to make a buck driver to power a PT-54 at 8A, heh.)

The guy I was talking to didn't really know much, he was just a salesman, but I could call back and at least see what it would take to get something designed and built. Linear is a reputable company and I assume that I would be able to meet and discuss things with the engineer in person. I personally don't have the capital to invest in such an endeavor and to be honest I really don't want to be in charge of such a thing!

But, if someone more knowledgeable than I would like to discuss things with this engineer, assuming I can get the guy to listen to me, I would be willing to make the initial contact plus I would be around to make some noise if things were to go sour. (Small claims court, for example.) And, if the guy could come up with some working prototypes I could possibly (big possible, in the less favorable way.) convince someone to invest enough to get some made.

I'm just throwing a bunch of stuff out, maybe something will come of it :D

Thanks Pontiacg5, No I have not spoken to the guy in person as he doesn't have a mic (I know right?). I have only spoken to him via email and google talk. Look to be honest from what people are telling me, this is a risky gamble... fair enough if it was my own money I'm putting up, but when it involves other peoples money.. I don't want to take the risk. I'm going to contact him again tonight and pretty much tell him, if he doesn't get a prototype of the driver done before payment then I will not be paying for anything.

Evidently I have heard good things from linear, and that was going to be my first point of call. But I met this guy via a forum and thought I could work out a deal.

At the same time I will be inquiring for linear technology's estimate on price and time just in case the first engineer falls through. I just really wish I knew more about electronics!!

Nope, bad idea.

I can just see it... the "Linear boost driver".

It's going to drive us nuts explaining that one to the newbs ;)

I was thinking something along the lines of nanoboost or nanodrive

What about if the guy who made it is called buck?

The linear boost driver by buck :undecided:

Well yep. It also striken me, that company called "Linear" makes switched mode driver IC's

Re: New Boost Driver in Dev *Asking for investors*

I used to know a member that sold Laser stuff on LPF that
when asked by a noob if he could build a DPSS Blue Laser..
he blatantly responded with "Sure no problem I can build
those"....

BTW... which ultimately led to his scamming role and banning...

Anyone can build anything in cyberspace until they have
your $$$$.

Re: New Boost Driver in Dev *Asking for investors*

Just throwing around some ideas here but what if someone were to build a board with 2 boost circuits on 1 board in parallel. Sort of like a dual flexdrive but just one one board. Even if the size increased and/or the price was $20 you would still have a driver capable of good efficiency and 2A.

Wouldn't that just be a board that has less possibilities in term of space assuming they were similar in size to a flexdrive.

Re: New Boost Driver in Dev *Asking for investors*

Maybe sell a pack of two with FLEXIBLE wires already soldered to them. I mean, in terms of HEAT, even a 90% effective driver would be wasting about 1W of heat, especially when most of heat is created at the IC, then it would heat up like if someone pointed a 1W laser at it... This is the same reason why we are not having 1.8W 445's in 10440 hosts. There is too many heat in a too small space. It could even get hot enough to reflow itself...
