Well, another way to look at the situation is that there are other places that you can go to enjoy your lasers. I would just avoid giving law enforcement the "opportunity" to decide which side of the law you are on. The only reason to do otherwise would be if you were an attorney and had an interest in protecting your individual rights to display lasers because of so called "local laws". As mentioned earlier, in the U.S. it is for the most part a federally mandated jurisdiction. Enjoy your lasers though, but carefully.(JMHO)

From that page: "If you use lasers in an outdoor environment in the U.S., and the laser beam enters navigable airspace, then you are required by federal law to report such activity and receive a letter from the Federal Aviation Administration that does not object to such activity."

Sounds like to me that what you're doing very well could be illegal, so please do all the research. It's often not cut and dry.

While I'm sure it doesn't say so specifically in that documentation, I have long been under the impression that FDA and FAA approval is only needed if the power output exceeds 5mW.. The laser that this thread is referring to is far more powerful than 5mW, and so it requires a variance from the FDA (which in turn requires the system's construction an output power to be FDA verified and approved) and it requires FAA clearance so that any aircraft can be warned of the laser activity.

hey angel do you think my neighbors across the street would mind me shinning my RPL at them lol (airport)
i hate having an airplane leave every ten minutes i told all my kids no lasers outside without me there

What, John You live next to a airport? That must really suck.

I live not too far away from a municipal airport, Palo Alto Ca. I was down their walking around in the wildlife preserve next to it, with my laser. Only used it for a few minutes. Shined it no wear near the airport. In fact, never even pointed it up in the air. Security was all over me. they even called the local police. thought I was a domestic terrorist.:na:

All those things I listed had happened to me. I was not talking about tickets or speeding. I was talking about them invading your privacy, arresting you, and seizing your stuff ect for no better reason other that they can. Yeah you can get a lawyer but it will cost you. Court appointed lawyers are worthless. If you cant afford a lawyer you are screwed. Most of the time its not worth geting a lawyer. And they know that. If your neighbors complain enough, they will come to your house and take it. Are you going to spend a $1000+ to get it back? No. Even if you did the judge would still rule against you because they will drum up enough charges it wont matter. The main focus for them is to keep peace in the neighborhood.

A friend in Atlanta got killed because they pulled him over for nothing more than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It just so happened he had 2 Ks of white stuff in the car. He ran and they gunned him down like a dog. They made up a story they got a tip. There was no tip. They just had nothing better to do, so they were randomly pulling over cars. Yeah my friend did some stupid things but the fact remains he died because the cops were bored.

Please dont be nieve, I'm not talking out of my a$$.

TJ, yes, this is true, but let me say you a thing (and this is not an attack to your ideas, is just how i feel it :)).

Police must understand one simple thing, too ..... they must understand that there are limits that you can't pass, and these limits varies from peoples to peoples ..... and they must understand that, passing these limits, they can be subject to anything, literally.

I am a quiet man, but not for nature ..... i am a quiet man cause i know what can happen if i loose definitely the control and the reason, and cause i'm scared from that what i can do in these conditions, cause, if someone push me over this limit, where there's nothing more that i care, nothing more that i loose, there's also no limits nor exceptions to the things that i can do, literally.

And this is not applying only to me, any person have different limits and reactions levels (i'm just thinking the one that here, some months ago, got a ticket for forbidden parking, got mad, go in the car and intentionally hit the policemen that ticketed him ..... or the one that, the last year, unsatisfied from a sentence, pulled a gun and killed the judge on-the-fly) .....

So, police must also know that their goods, lives and families can be put in danger, if they pass these limits a bit too much, no matter if they carry weapons and go around in group ..... there's always a way for a payback, if one really want and don't care about his life.

ALL TRUE. :) however the best option is to have a 5mw dealextreme laser.. and even if it has over 5mw... .. so.. 10.. 15mw... what is the problem? if they want confiscate it... PERFECT!... you lost only 10 dollars. and they become happy ahaha

REMEMBER a cop can not never bonds to empty pockets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!never! no perquisition! at max give them the 5mw pointer.. and keep in pocket the over100mw laser

I would just keep a little Green LED light with me, so if I'm questioned I can show them the light.

OR

keep a 5mW cheap red pointer with me (those ones you get at the dollar store)

As long as:

The laser is under 5mW

You don't shine the laser at aircraft

You don't shine the laser at your neighbors or their houses/vehicles

Then you are not breaking any laws and are well within your rights to star-point or do whatever from your own property.

EDIT: this applies to US residents only

Very well put. What you were doing was illegal, and they had every right to call the police.
