thanks for that explanation great gazoo ;D this forum and its members have been very helpful so far. i got 1 of the phazor red diodes from ddl but was wondering is there anywhere that sells a heatsink that would fit a standard aixiz laser module?

You know, I built two "Kipkay Cool burning laser pointers" (diode without driver) and two "Blu-ray Laser Phasers" (without a gun)
and they all have worked for me extremely well, without problems. I know the diodes are both at risk, and I notice the blu-ray gets a little warm, but I've used the heck out of them for the past 4 months and never had a single problem! I am waiting for one to die. I wouldn't really want to fry the blu-rays since I paid $60 (including shipping) a piece for the ps3 module, but through ebay, I bought two Sony 16X 140mW 650nm diodes for $24. So for $12 a diode, I was fine experimenting with it, to my surprise has worked extremely well so far. The burning capabilities are way stronger then the DX 150mW (melts/engraves black plastic very efficiently, lights matches, and burns dark skin (my black friend claims it stings strong and quick, but since I'm white, I don't feel it!)) ;D)

BlueFusion:

Thanks. I believe it also depends a lot on whether the resistor is carbon, metal film or wire wound right? I can't imagine how carbon would burn out and short circuit but I could be wrong.

If it's your first laser I wouldn't worry about heatsinking first. Heatsinking only allows you to run the laser longer (longer duty cycle). My laser doesn't have a heatsink but I always turn it off after 15seconds just to be safe. You could first make a laser w/o heatsink and get it working before you think of adding a heatsink on as an upgrade :)

My best recommendation is to do the MXDL mod and get a heatsink from Jay. The phasor diodes, like the open cans can use additional heatsinking since we are running more current through them. I know the open cans get pretty darn hot, but still an aixiz module would provide adequate heatsinking for short duty cycles. Following is the link for Jay's thread... ;)
