Just a minor correction: regarding your example....

Imagine the man walked up to you and said, "Don't bother, you can buy mine for $109 and it'll do exactly what you want." Then, turning away in disgust, something catches your eye. It's a home improvement magazine, with the guy who was trying to sell you a tool on the cover, subtitled, "Greatest Home Improver Ever? See inside."

Would you then consider it?

I asked what I thought was a simple question. I was hoping for some first-hand information since a few of the posts I read seemed to be knowledgeable.

The very first thing I see after making my first post is a vague sales pitch. That doesn't inspire confidence. No part of it answered my question. I bluntly (but without crass language) turned it down. AFTER I started typing my reply, he posts a link to the data.

Instead of dropping it, I get called names. I respond only after being directly and crassly insulted, yet somehow I'M the troll. Well, I guess I am now. I certainly spent more time here than I should have. So much for your "highly regulated forum."

Before it's too late, here is some important advice:

If you live in the USA, which I assume you do, you will run into legal and safety issues if you try to use a laser with a greater output power than 5mW for work. As such, you want a 5mW green pointer that is rugged enough for daily use and being carried in a pocket. I say green because green is most visible to the eye, far brighter in appearance than red.

Laserglow Technologies - Handheld Lasers, Alignment Lasers and Lab / OEM Lasers

That's probably your best bet, it's $39, and Laserglow is an extremely reputable retailer. You can also call them if you have any questions.
