The open source host/heatsink dimensions is a great idea! I for one would like to have easy access to condensed information about LPF standard diodes/hosts/threading/etc.

Just a note. The dimensions I gave were for the 3D cell battery maglight. As far as I've heard you can give the 445 diodes a little more juice than what was first thought. So I think the 4D cell would work, but don't quote me on that as I am using the 3D cell. :p

This is a great idea however ! Glad I could help.

An interesting idea at least. However unless someone has metal working equipment or access to it, this info will be of very little use to most people. Sure they could get a machine shop to make it for them, but I think people would balk at the costs of that for most part. Jayrob or flaminpyro's custom heatsinks are going to cost much less than the rate typical machine shops would charge.

It would also ease the job of the machinists on these forums, seeing as their client could give them a design of their own to exact specifications. New machinists would benefit the most, though. And even though it costs a lot, I'm sure some people would like to witness a host being made themselves (I know I would). :)

all of the info above is helpful but like pontiac said it is still going to be trial and error unless you are measuring the actual module and diode you plan to use..

example... had my neighbor make me some aluminum heatsinks for an aixiz module. i gave him a sample. he made me 10 of them. good news is that the sample i sent him fit perfectly in all the hs's. my other aixiz' do not fit so well, have to hone them out.

you must always take into account run fluctuations from the manufacturer.

I agree.

Before getting my lathe I found a local machinist and gave him the dimensions of a heatsink I wanted him to make, After explaining the idea he charged me 50$ to make it. After I got it the dimensions we're all hairs off i.e the AixiZ module slipped through the hole instead of press fit in and the diameter wasn't quiet big enough so it rattled in the host.......

It was from then on I just purchased kits until I saved enough to afford my own lathe. But I still think this is a good idea at least being able to give a general idea and some sort of dimension to go off of and then manipulating them to whatever is needed.

An AixiZ module is supposed to be 12mm.
I got one so far, the treads are not perfectly lined up so it will not fit in a 12mm hole without some sandpapering and twisting of the tread.

A database of measurements will still require a supply of sandpaper, preferably the wet kind.
1/10 or 1/100 of a mm can make a big difference.

Another problem with the aixiz modules, well not really a problem, but something to watch out for. They were probably 12mm BEFORE they were plated. So after plating they'll be a tiny bit bigger.
