Black widow bites also can cause another long lasting syndrome called death!

actually, most death's from black widow bites are caused by allergy. While the venom from all spiders in the genus Latrodectus is extremely toxic (Think nerve agent. Atropine will even counteract some of the effects) They also inject a truly tiny amount of the venom. A small child can die from a single rather nasty bite, but the vast majority of the bites are from allergic reaction.

That being said, Latrodectus spiders do kill more humans then any other spider. Largely due to being present on every continent except for Antarctica. Although human deaths from bee stings are still considerably more common. As an allergy could exist to either one equally frequently, and bee stings are considerably more common.

Here in North America there are 3 spiders slightly nastier from a single bite then Latrodectus. The most well known is the Brown Recluse (usually a term applied to all spiders of the genus Loxosceles). However in the pacific northwest over to Montana and down into Utah there are the Hobo Spiders, and Yellow Sac spiders are all over North America. All three of these spider types are known to produce necrotic lesions. With the majority of the bites stemming from yellow sac spider bites. The bites of all 3 spiders are routinely diagnosed as "Brown Recluse spider bites" regardless of where you live, and if there are even brown recluse spiders present.

Now in the united states, these are the only known medically significant spiders known to continuously inhabit a range still. As for frying one with a laser, a black widow would die easily to any color laser, as long as you had multiple watts Although if using a red or IR laser, watch out for reflections if you hit one of its red spots...... a yellow sac spider, being a pale yellow color would just get mad and run around, although a BR laser might have better luck, they aren't available in high enough powers. While normally non aggressive, this might get it to change it's mind. A brown recluse or hobo spider, might take some more damage but would still be likely to just get mad. Last thing anyone would want hiding in their bedroom is a blind, hurt, and very mad somewhat toxic spider from any one of these genus.

As for other countries. Most of the nastiest spiders in the world are considerably larger. The wattage of laser needed to kill a Sydney Funnelweb for instance would be rather high. As they are the side of a small bird. Not to mention who would want to risk pissing one off. I would recommend if you wish to use a laser to kill spiders, borrow the Death Star and simply blow up the entire planet. After all, anything short of it simply leaves a vacuum of no predators in their niche. So in would move new spiders to take their place.

Glue boards will catch and trap lots of spiders quite well, pesticides will work too.

Only little girls are afraid of spiders. I really don't see the point in killing spiders for no reason,
Get your priorities back on track.
Right. Like anyone in their right mind would risk this:

to save a poor spider's life.
Oohh,.. He's sooo cute.... and harmless:

So shit bag (I mean Folder), you don't kill spiders? You must not have any kids, pets or loved ones you care about in your home.
Sorry for you... :(
Well at least you have your spider friends.

They're like bees. The won't hurt you if you don't piss them off. Just leave them alone.

That's only partially true, due to being generalized.

Female spiders protecting the eggs or young bastards are very very agressive, will give you about 1 second to get out of her range or she'll attack.

For bees, see here:
The 5 Most Horrifying Bugs in the World | Cracked.com Africanized bees.

Reat the entire article while you're at it, I can't get enough of their style of writing. Bada$$ :D

...You finished yet? Or are you still crying?

You really must be one of the stupidest people to have ever been born. I have pets in my home, I have loved ones, and I have a few spiders in here as well on occasion. Red backs as we call them in Australian aren't dangerous at all if you don't taunt them or act to try and harm them. I'm still coming to terms with your stupidity. Some people do get bitten when they don't do anything, but it's quite easy to go to the doctor and get the anti-venom, and people almost never get bitten if they're careful.

I passed some negative reputation for this.

You might want to take a step back and observe your actions. You are calling a veteran member here "stupid" because he does not share your love of spiders.

I'm arachnophobe and I am terrified of those critters , regardless of size, shape or danger posed.

Just because you can stand spider crawling on you, does not make you a better man, and certanly does not give you the right to talk down to people that can't stand it .

Well, we can't stand you. Get off your high horse or get the f*ck out.

Behaviour like this violates TOS.

x_x Tell that to my innocent hand which was bitten in my sleep :( imma have to disagree with you on that one.. they will feed if they're hungry..

You can see the bite on my hand in the vid i posted of me frying the spider with a laser i posted at the beginning of this thread.. I am mildly allergic to spider bites and being bitten by them before i immediately knew what it was based on the symptoms i had. so i rushed to the doctors office the very next morning.

@ppctx :O is that Photoshoped? The angle of the camera and the picture oh the wall looks trippy if you stare at it long enough like a optical illusion. pretty cool.

As for the spider i fried ill post the vid again.

This was the DX 200 mW red. Worked perfectly.. I didnt have it perfectly focused at the start.

I fried a mosquito using a 445nm @ around 440A (idk the mW) it worked perfectly with the driver attached to a pair of batteries loosely attached. I managed to barely touch them together to get a very light dot on the mosquito in order to focus it then i press the batteries together at full blast and fry him.. (he landed on the wall for me after biting me.. he had a full red belly and everything *probably food coma*)

*edit* reposted video on youtube for non facebook users.

Funny how some threads just stick in your head... I read this over a month ago and last week I finally got a chance to test this out for myself. Now, first, I don't hate spiders, I know they serve a useful function in the food chain, etc. and I have no particular love of killing anything. That being said, I found an extremely large spider that had decided to take up residence on the new deck I built on the back of my house. Since there are kids, dogs and grown ups out there regularly the 5 foot diameter web he spun just wasn't going to work- and neither was he. I had no desire to spray poison all over my deck or go chasing him around with a broom or whatever so I remembered this thread and decided to give it a go with my new laser- a 680mW 405nm Tank007 built by our own Flamin'Pyro. (side note here- Jeff does an AMAZING job of building lasers, I could not be happier with mine).

So I walked out on my deck and he ducked up into a light fixture on the front roof of the deck. I fired up the laser and aimed it into the opening and it did not take much time at all before he came running out onto the web and stopped. I brought the beam around and the second it touched him he started moving, but even the short burst he was hit with seemed to have impaired him. Let me tell you- the hardest thing about killing a spider with a laser is keeping the beam on them, it's not easy. After a couple of tries I hit him square on from about 5-6 feet and he almost immediately began to sizzle. He was still moving but I thought it was likely nerves still firing. So I hit him one more time for a couple of seconds and when smoke started to roll off of him I knew he was a goner.

So- can you kill a spider with a laser? Yep, you bet you can- at least a 680mW 405 does the trick nicely... but it's not easy boys and girls, at a distance of a few feet you have to hit a target the size of a dime while it is moving fast and keep the beam focused on them for a second or two in order to get the job done. What I did find out is that this is entirely possible with a laser that is not outside the reach of mere mortals.

I have killed 9 spiders with my focusable 445 and 6 wasps they are even harder to kill than a spyder. I got them when it was cold one morning!

Grab a bottle of Windex or some chemical cleaner or spray, turn the nozzle to STREAM and shoot away, pump a couple shots into the creature and it becomes so wet it cant move and falls, pick it up with a tissue, give a good squeeze, hear some juicy pop action inside your hands as you squeeze the tissue.. and dispose =]
