I'm in Australia and due to our strict laws we cannot import or buy lasers over 1mw. All i need is one of the lasers that has a focused beam that is visible, that astronomers use ect. So not just the dot, but the visible beam. It does not need to be powerful, in fact id prefer it to be safe to human eyes. I dont need to burn anything, but to obtain one such as this, it is a very lengthy and expensive process. Is it possible i could change a lens to one of our 1mw pointers that would do this, or change it in some way. Sorry for the inexperienced question, I am new to all these complex lasers. :thanks:
I am more than willing to build something or edit something myself, just wondering what i can do that is the fastest way to obtain one that matches these characteristics of relatively safe and has a beam.

One may want to legally build a 1mw 520nm green laser with a secret switch that turns it to 10 or 20mw. This would be easily done by using an LM317 with a limiting resistor for maximum power, in series with a series of resistors jumped by switches that you can turn off to decrease power. But that's not necessary for what you want to do. It's pretty difficult to get exactly 1mw out of a green laser, but no police are gonna take out an LPM and take you to jail.

You can get the laser diode, or laser diode already installed into a module from DTR
DTR Laser PLT5
Use his pictures to determine which currents you need to set for which powers. Or buy one of his with a driver already installed for easy adjustmentns

Mount that module into a heatsink to keep it straight in line ebay search: "laser heatsink"
Put the whole assembly in a project box to keep the wires safe.
Or choose from a variety of hosts made by the good people here on the LPF. Go to the Laser Pro or Buy Sell Trade sections. If you know how to solder, Survival Laser has good easy to use hosts

You can find more information on the LM317 driver by searching on the forums.

What about member "SyKo" and his Aussie based sight? He might be able to steer you in the right direction.

Thanks guys for all your help! I ordered a laser module, what do you think is the best way to install it? As in should i buy a heat sink or something and put it in that? Thanks so much
