I'd suggest you now to start with an 808nm laser because our eyes cant see 808nm!
Check out the link from @Lethere Belight

Won't IR still damage your eyes, you just don't have the blink reflex, right?

I'd recommend a cheap bluray single mode or red if you want for a first build, without investing/risking much.

Laser Diodes : Cajunlasers Store

You'll need
A diode of your choosing
An aixis module
3 element lens (G1/2 optional)
Flashlight housing to put it in
Heatsink made to fit or purchased
constant current driver for diode
lithium batts and charger

This is not a good choice for a first build. As the beam is nearly invisible, you need goggles for any use of this laser. You can use a vidcam to help focus, etc. as it can see 808nm as gray. You will have better luck and more enjoyment from a red, blue, or violet diode as your first build. Read up a little in the forums for these color lasers. We want you to have a successful first build. Make sure to get goggles for any laser you build, you'll need them for things like close up burning.
