Need green Laser pen...I read the stickies....

Hello everyone. After reading the stickies I still can't determine which laser to get. I went to cni, laserglow, and one other that I can't think of right now. They were all mentioned in the sticky. I couldn't find the laser mentioned in the sticky at any of the sites.

I'm looking for a cheap(under $20 I hope?) pen/compact flashlight style laser with a on/off click button, not one I have to hold down. It will be used indoors in a factory setting. Its primary use will be for pointing at electrical conduit (pipework) in the ceiling. Distance would be up to 60' at most with most applications probably in the 30' range. I want it to operate on AAA or AA as I get the batteries for free from work for our tools.

Would appreciate any suggestions. Hoping one of the $10-$20 style ones will suffice.

First of all are the pipes polished ? will they reflect the laser ? if so i wouldn't recommend a green laser since it can hurt your eyes from looking at the dot. But i can recommend you to get a red laser with a bit more than 5mW. Probably 50mW would be more than enough.

AND for the red laser i couldn't find any with a temporary on/off button. Im not recommending you a good laser store suchs as scifilaser,laserbtb,or something else since your budget is low so I'm just giving you the very basics on lasers.

Most of the ceiling/conduit ends up being painted white. New conduit though is galvanized(the stuff we use anyway)which is sort of a silver finish to help against rust. Sometimes it has a bit of a shine to it and sometimes its flat. Not sure if that helps you at all.

So by just looking at a green dot on a surface is bad for your eyes? or do you mean if it is reflected back at your eyes?

The green dot will be bad just by looking at it, of course the closer you are the worst it is. At 30-60ft away i don't think it would be that of an issue if you are using a laser less than 50mW, reflecting surfaces can hurt you but for the info that you are giving me i can assume that is not going to be such a problem. If you are going to use the laser for a long time or frequently, i would recommend you to spend some money on a quality laser that will last you for some time, and that you know its power output. You get what you pay for, therefore it depends of you and the kind of use that you are going to give it !

First off I love your signature pic lol... hilarious. And id agree a red laser is better suited for your needs the poster above me is surely more knowledgeable than I but for your purposes you dont need much power and id second his recommendation

staring at any laser dot is technically hazardous. green will be the brightest, its not really more dangerous if it is IR filtered, however it will be more expensive when properly made. its the number of photons that cause damage more than anything. anything under 5mW is fine as long as its only brief, but caution still should be taken. if you need something bright, but a bit more safe a 635nm laser is probably a good compromise. 3mW or so of 635nm is going to be pretty bright, but not outrageous, be cheaper, and going to have a better battery life to boot.
