Blue is a lot stronger than it looks to our eyes, and our light sensing nerves on our retinas do not bleach out to protect themselves from blue only light as they do with white light, also you can do chemical retina damage and think you are ok, then go blind the next day.

Blue light is dangerous, you would be better off viewing a direct green 30mw laser show safely and it would look very bright. Add a fog machine and it looks awesome.

A moving spot such with a laser show spreads the energy over time and area and is safer to view, a stationary spot is harder on your eyes. But you must safeguard against reflective objects.

If you have a garage wall clear of reflective items you could make a green laser Spirograph, those are a lot of fun.

My high power blue laser burning I can't watch without my laser safety glasses on, but I can record it and watch on my laptop's screen.

For direct viewing I would get away from blue and violet and go to green and red, buy a light show and observe all safety precautions.

I agree with TombyG on this, a bit suspicious for you to be dealing with this rather than your "adult friend." Besides, closed can is actually IMO not as great as everyone makes it to be. I prefer open can diodes because besides the lens there are no other direct obstructions or possibilities for them such as any kind of foreign matter on the diode window. Can you give any more detail to the problem other than "dust"?

Does the Nubm44 have an open can option? Or is this a different diode that was in his laser.

Red cowboy, is it still ok to use blue lasers outside assuming you are very careful about keeping the dot far away from you, and others. I find the blue light so beautiful. Oh, and about the diode. I have no clue. I was very curious what diode it was. At first I assumed it was the numb44, but he mentioned that with a g2 lens, it cold do 8.3 watts. Could the numb44 really do that much power? I just assumed it was some unusual diode. Don't know why everyone still thinks i am lying that this laser is for my friend. I have talked to him about safety, but he docent know much about the actual mechanics/terms used when talking about lasers. Therefore, him asking to get a laser built would not go well. I feel insulted that everyone thinks i am using this as an excuse to get a 7 watt laser. I already have a 1 watt of my own.

Another thing to keep in mind is to not share the laser with anyone who doesn't know about the dangers. I've had a scary experience with a 100mw 532nm nova penlaser of all things. I was shining it around outside and my cousin wanted to try it out. I gave the usual lecture about not shining at people/planes/reflective objects etc. Guess what the first thing they did was? They went and started waving it all around at some parked cars within 20 feet of us and sending a bunch of reflections all over the place. That might have gone really badly, had it been a >1W laser.

Holy crap man! That's insane, yeah I've had my fair share of bad experiences. My worst was about 2 months ago when one of my friends friend got a hold of my 1w blue and started shining it at the house we were in. Scared my half to death cause I knew what it was capable of doing, I yelled out the door to stop and please put it down. By the way he was drunk. I never brought it over again. It was that night I realized a lot of people are stupid.

Using blue lasers outside 'should' be fine. I don't think any harm can come of merely seeing the beam or the spot on distant objects. They're just not the best lasers to use indoors without eye-protection.

Na listen son, just stick with low power lasers for now. No one needs a 1 watt laser to enjoy them. 1 watt may seem like a low power these days but it still is a lot of power and enough to cause serious damage even when you think you're prepared. Accidents are exactly that, accidents. They happen when we don't mean for them to happen. Having safety goggles is a good start towards safety but it doesn't prevent all accidents. For now I suggest you stick with max 200-250mw. Just grow up a little before you take on the bigger ones. Sound good kiddo?

Green Lasers Listen to this guy he may be a new member but what he is saying is correct I have a spot in my eye from 30mW. You don't need that high power start with low power and work your way up.

A 14 year old and a 7W 445nm laser is an accident looking for a place to happen.

A 14 year old who clearly doesn't know much about lasers or laser safety or have much experience with lasers and wants to get or give one to his "adult" friend who knows evern less or nothing about lasers is not an indication of good judgement just emotion driven thinking. Unless the "adult friend" is one of his parents, "adult friend" means nothing/is meaningless.

14 years old is 14 years old is 14 years old--- a Minor, a Child without adult standing in the real world. His parents are responsible for his behavior he until 18 years old. Any harm he causes himself or other people, they are responsible for---will be their legal and financial liability. Anyone 18 or older who plays a part in enabling him to play with dangerous devices can also be held responsible.

There are real reasons in the real world, legal and liability reasons, that the Terms of Use of this forum which everyone has to agree to to be able to use the forum says:
"3. Eligibility
You must be the age of majority as that is defined in your jurisdiction to visit or use the Website in any manner. You represent and warrant to Laser Pointer Forums that You have reached the age of majority in your jurisdiction, and that You have the right, authority and capacity to agree to and abide by this Agreement. You also represent and warrant to Laser Pointer Forums that You will use the Website in a manner consistent with any and all applicable laws and regulations." That means 18 years old or older in California.

California Penal Code says in,
Section 417.25 (c) As used in this section, "laser pointer" means any hand held laser beam device or demonstration laser product that emits a single point of light amplified by the stimulated emission of radiation that is visible to the human eye.
Section 417.27 (a) No person, corporation, firm, or business entity of any kind shall knowingly sell a laser pointer to a person 17 years of age or younger, unless he or she is accompanied and supervised by a parent, legal guardian, or any other adult 18 years of age or older.

Does any of that translate into it is OK for adults to encourage and/or enable a 14 year old to aquire and play with 7W 445nm lasers?

This forum is not about babysitting emotion driven 14 years olds who clearly don't know what they are doing or why and who want to engage in seriously dangerous activities like playtime with very powerful and very dangerous lasers for whatever reasons.

Anyone who does anything with this child without personal contact with and a notarized letter from his parents saying they understand the risks and agree it is OK and sanction the activity, is reckless and irresponsible. It is one thing if adults responsible for themselves want to take risks of whatever kind, it is another thing to be a part of/play a role in putting someone else's child at risk--especially putting their child at risk without their knowledge. The 14 year old is someone else's child and responsibility. How hard is that to comprehend or understand?

Example of responsible: DTR posts this "disclaimer" on his diodes page for real reasons:
*Disclamer*

I don't know how many times i have to say this. The only blue laser I have is a 1 watt. The 7 watt is not mine. Belive what you want. Also, I have improved safety wise since the recent incidents that occurred, and have not had any close calls since then. This whole experience taught me to understand the powers, and danger associated with a class 4 lasers, and to respect it as much as any weapon. You must always be aware of where the beam is, and potential risks associated with its current location. One wrong move can have disastrous results, and can make you wish u never used a laser. It is important to remember this when using a class 4 laser. Also, if people keep saying that i have not used lower powered lasers before, I have. I have a 100mw green, and many 50mw lasers. If all i get is hatred here, I think I will have to stop posting. Everyone makes mistakes, but these mistakes were in the past. LET IT GO! Can you please forgive me?

"I truly believe that everything that we do and everyone that we meet is put in our path for a purpose. There are no accidents; we're all teachers - if we're willing to pay attention to the lessons we learn, trust our positive instincts and not be afraid to take risks or wait for some miracle to come knocking at our door."-Marla Gibbs

Ok,
I don't know if this will settle all the hoopla down or increase it. I have spoken with GLR and his father concerning his laser purchases, saftey etc.
I assure you his father has given his consent. That being said, I have also offered to see what's wrong with the 7w laser alien built him, no charge. The 7w laser is in what looks like (in video, I don't have it yet) a stainless steel survival lasers host without battery extension tube. It has two puny 16340 batteries powering it. I'm suprised that thing did anything more than blink on for a few seconds. After examining the laser and determining whats wrong with it, he will then decide what he wants done, obviously not gonna rebuild nubm44 in this host. To make a long story short, I'm glad I got involved here as GLR has a HUGE interest in this hobby (laser talk for an hour..lol) and doesn't deserve the bashing he has recieved here or someone taking advantage of his interest in this hobby,
Danny

Thanks for helping, Danny. The recent discussion has just been too ridiculous. +rep

I don't know why so many just jumped on the bandwagon and started harping on GLR's age and safety when it wasn't even all that relevant to the situation at hand. Sure his age might not be legally appropriate, but better to be civil and keep anybody serious about lasers on the forum than to push them away by patronizing and berating them. I think this site relishes all the drama a bit too much.:(

We should all encourage kids especially in the sciences, too few of them have intrests there and they are after all, our future.
Danny
This. Would everybody prefer 14 year olds just play online games all day? I'm sure many great inventors and visionaries in our society played around with 'dangerous' things at a young age.

A lot of rep abuse on this forum. Check out my rep page. Some butthurt people with nothing better to do eh? Still I don't know how electricplasma was able to hit me twice in a matter of a few days. On a few other forums where I encountered the rep system people weren't allowed to rep until at least a week later. I thought that was mandatory for having the rep system but I guess not.
Anyways GLR keep your head up and stick with low level lasers for now. Trust me you'll thank me later for it. Enjoy the wavelengths first and the power later on. In fact a lot of guys I know are more about the wavelength and building it rather than power.
Don't worry too much about the rep. The system is unmoderated and heavily abused. As long as you're overall a positive contributor the negatives won't matter in the long run.

Hi,
we all have to learn some time so we just have to be more savy to whom approach and help here. we are very cautious about the age factor and it's all good. just remember when we were all green and knew little about WL'S and safety . Good job to all and keep this forum on the safe side..
Rich:)
