HI:

I am new to lasers but not new to electronics or mechanics.
(I build robots for fun.)

I intend to build a portable laser that can take out a mouse from a minimum of 1 meter distance.

I think that 10+ watts of output should do the trick.
I am thinking that 3 or 4 9mm 445nm diodes in an array should do it.
JLSE seems to have mastered this concept and I am HIGHLY impressed by his work.

So am I on the right track?

Can this be accomplished by using other diode/laser types, perhaps without an array?

What optics will I need?

Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. I am fine with regards to laser safety.

Hmmm,
think he is looking for a star wars blaster or star trek phaser ! If you find one, especially a mice killer, let me know. Being the nerd I am , I always wondered how come the laser guns never reflected off windows, mirrors and the like and killed the person shooting it in the movies. Everytime I mentioned it people would say, that cant happen. Yea, that's why I wear goggles when using my 1.6w 445. Would'nt it have been cool in Star Wars if Han was shooting at some storm troopers and accidentally blew his own arm off, then he could do that floating in healing water shit and get one of them good arms like Luke or Darth Vader.Even worse, Imagine if he took out Chewbacca with a reflection! Anyways, sorry about going off on a tangent there. I don't think the mouse zapper would be feasible, very cool, but not feasible.

They invented these things years ago called mouse traps... No laser necessary.

You even get humane ones!

Get rid of the mouse and more pests will start popping up. Mice eat other things that you don't want around, removing the mouse and it'll be replaced by bugs and other pests

Same thing with spiders and snakes.......the world has a natural balance, which mess with it?

^Cats do it so much better. Seriously though , you can build friken robots and you're going to spend ~$1000 on one that (sort of) kills mice. I would say you ran out of ideas there man..

You won't be able to kill a mouse with any hobby/non-industrial grade laser. Sorry, just won't happen.

Even if you "could" I think a BB gun would be a whole lot more efficient and safe.

Make sure you buy mouse traps that snap the mouse with a metal bar.
Do not use glue traps, they are inhumane.

I don't think this will be possible, unless you had some handheld version of military grade laser or if you have the stability and accuracy of a tracking system. Look up the mosquito laser system on google and you can see that for this to be possible at the hobbyist level, you would need a tracking algorithm and a much more powerful laser (since bugs are black and don't have bones protecting their insides, also mice don't have wings so neutralizing them will take a lot more).
I would stay stick to mouse traps.... but still build the laser :)

Varth Daters aside, a LASER powerful enough to pierce a mouse's heart would keep piercing right on
through the mouse, out the other side, through your floor, and probably set your house on fire. Not
having a house will solve the problem of mice in your house. Mind you, such LASERs do exist, but
they are so large they would fill a room in your house, require the power it takes to run several houses,
and cost as much as a house. If you had to sell your house to buy a LASER, then you would still need
to buy a housing to house the laser, and where would the power come from?

Seriously, the best scenario I can come up with that involves LASERs would be to blind the mouse and
disorient it and then whack it with a shoe. That is still iffy though because even a blind mouse might be
able to hide and get away. Then it will go off and starve to death painfully and miserably inside your
walls and stink up the place.

I would say you need to do a little detective work. Figure out how/where the mice are getting in and
seal it off with cement and metal hardware cloth. If that doesn't work, raise a population of outside cats
who will eat the mice before they get in. We have been mouse free here for a while now.

I like the first one with the laser beam piercing the mouses heart so your going to have to buy a timer that will shut the beam off before it burns down the house

I will personally give give a years supply of "VEGEMITE" to whoever can build a laser that will fry this guys mouse.:lasergun: Pics of course. I will also give a tent to SRS so he a place to stay!:yh:

I personally have a massive YAG laser that's probably big enough to do the trick. Would probably only need minor modifications to kill a mouse and certainly wouldn't set anything on fire since it would only be a high energy pulse that would be focused small enough to hit the mouses vital organs. The problem is, the laser is on wheels and weighs hundreds of pounds. Not exactly portable.

Though, you can keep your nasty Vegemite. You couldn't pay me to take a years worth
