Hey sorry guys, been supa busy!

Im glad to see such interest, and im glad there are some members here that are good with html, css etc. I was just curious , how would you guys implement a video upload/download type system? I tried it myself, but i couldn't do anything past joomla (mind you im not A+ with coding, or even close). I was shooting for something similar to youtube or whatnot, but every script i found was bogus.

Ill be checking a ton more, i didnt realize so many posted.

Thanks again!

I had planned right from the start to implement something just like that in Perl.
No probs there.
Plus I got in first :p

If we want to have a youtube-style video site, we will need a dedicated server so we can use ffmpeg or something to convert the videos to flv.

Or even, why make it complicated, we could just code something to accept regular wmv, avi or such videos and display them in an embedable media player.

Was expecting such a thing, not so much to convert the vids but just use a player that accepts common formats.
If we need a dedicated server, I can probably provide one just for the conversion, but upload speed from it would not be high enough to use as the main server.

LOL, dedicated server can just be somethin u pay $8 per month for.

I already have a server grade box for myself (not just a box, but a dual processor mobo, not dual core, dual processor) and hispeed uplink., though I am considering investing in something more serious, a fully dedicated brand new server and 2mbit uplink.
actually, just had a discussion with Boostaholic on laserchat, I might actually be able to get some nice gear.

Dedicated server: A server which is used solely for use by one organization. The server is leased and stored in the data center of the host company.

I wish I could get one for $8/month. You are probably talking about shared hosting, most people use shared hosting to host personal webpages or websites that don't have LOTS of traffic. Each user has a section on the shared server that they use for them self, and all the other users have their own sections, but still on the same server.

If we just make it simple, we could just have it allow users to upload media then just embed it with regular windows media/quicktime.

Im really good with flash, and I could convert the files to swf, with a play button and everything just like youtube...
people could send us the vids, we convert, and bam its there

Just my 2 cents.

I think based on N00B's email that the main task is to reduce the admin overhead on the site. I know how taxing just approving things may become once spammers try to get their crap through.

It is actually easy to interface with joomla or almost any other CMS to where you can add a link for users to upload stuff and have multiple admins that can preview and approve submissions.

Don't try to go into a youtube type setup unless you have the traffic to justify the development cost. They have a lot of stuff going on the background that is not as easy as it seems. One of the reasons they convert to flash is to keep people from downloading the vids. I'm not sure that applies here.

Bandwidth on videos can get really expensive. I used to manage the hosting division for a shared hosting provider a while back. We handled about 1000 domains and some did provide video streams, if you are in Tier 1 data centers it can end up costing you big bucks.

One of the things we do now, is managing space on data centers and only deal with dedicated servers and above. I've never seen anything close to $8/mon for actual dedicated server pricing so I'll be happy to get into that if you can provide me with the info. We try to maintain presence in at least 3 to 5 data centers for our monitoring and backup systems, so we are always on the lookout for good deals on dedicated servers.

Hope this helps,

Alberto

OK well. I do now have access to a quality shared server, but very low use. I had no plan at all to keep the vids in flv format, as it's just a nuisance. WMP is a piece of shit frankly, and quicktime is dodgy at best. Only thing left IMO is DivX Web player. :/ it is one of the best. however uncommon.
ah well I'll come up with a good format eventually.

Whatever becomes of it, it will be a place users can upload videos and view them without waiting for moderation or whatnot, but where we can come in and delete spam.
Now I just need n00b to come back and transfer me the domain and whatnot.

Wait a min, N00b sent out an e-mail???!!?

I was the third one in on this, it would be noce if I got any updates or e-mails regarding this... unless you dont need/want me...

and I too agree that flv is a pain in the ass when it comes to downloading and such, but swf and flv are 2 easy to work with internet formats... its all up to you guys

It should be rather automated, with an admin panel for 1 click approve or disapprove videos.
