Well as my second build a chose a c6 bundle from survival lasers and a m140 diode module from dtr
IMG_0670_zpsgfnt0oyb.jpg
[/IMG] this is starting to get everything ready, it's here I noticed the first problem ( diode module has a full back not half back) but we chose to move on
IMG_0671_zpskgrth2xt.jpg
[/IMG] this is soldering the brass ring to the battery board ( should have noticed a problem here but didn't brass ring upside down)
IMG_0674_zpskzqmxt55.jpg
[/IMG] Ooooops pushed the driver board in the pill and it didn't go in straight because the brass ring was upside down it is tapered for a reason ( now I know) what to do??, time to get the dermal out and see if we can salvage this
IMG_0673_zpsy1ymrt5z.jpg
[/IMG]Ok clean up enough I think? ( but unknown at this time is the driver board is to far in the pill positive wont touch the contact board)
IMG_0675_zpsp24ofwka.jpg
[/IMG]so I proceed to tin the wires
IMG_0676_zpsdw6phxoj.jpg
[/IMG]on the diode side also
IMG_0677_zpsxhspfchb.jpg
[/IMG]Oooops forgot the shrink tube on the ground wire lets do that again
IMG_0678_zpsiely5fpc.jpg
[/IMG] better.
IMG_0679_zpsoeq9hqq2.jpg
[/IMG]So I proceed to thermo compound the module and tighten it in the heat sink
IMG_0688_zpsstmaoc3e.jpg
[/IMG] Put it all back together put batteries in push the button and NOTHING!! Booo!!
IMG_0686_zpsbxocqnd0.jpg
[/IMG] Figure out the positive isn't touching the contact board so I try to build up the positive part of the board
IMG_0686_zpsbxocqnd0.jpg
[/IMG] after a few tries I build up enough, I think?? So I put everything back together and???
IMG_0685_zpsqwbij0ke.jpg
[/IMG] Bingo!! But that's the hard way to build a laser, but I learned what not to do!

Bob, glad to see it turned out rather well in the end!
Those are the kind of mistakes we've all made. IMO, it's a good way to learn; if you haven't ever made any mistakes, you haven't done anything.

Ha! Good time you had! I had thermal grease all over on my first build. Order of operation and check as you go. I really wish the SL hosts were designed to allow swapping of heatsink and driver/contact board as one piece without having to desolder anything. One host serving many diodes and drivers.

Thanks BowTieGuy, they are a exercise in patience. But the challenge was fun. And I have one more laser for my collection.

dden4012, true thermo compound does get everywhere! That s4x build is on my list to do, I really like those hosts.

Oh the first few build are always interesting. Just sad I lost my first m140 build camping... damn you vodka.. hehee. Did you happen to use a test load? I know the SL drivers are preset... but its a good tool to know how to use.
Nice build!!

10fenny, no I don't have a test load as of yet. Planning on getting one shortly. Just got a LPM and a adjustable power supply on order. Still need bench muliti-meter have a portable but want a bench. Than it's time to work on the test/dummy loads and all sorts of parts/tools but for some reason people still want me to pay my bills, ( can't figure this one out, can't they see I have better things to spend my money on! ) Heeee, have a grat one !

10fenny, just personal preference, think they look cool setting on the bench. Still have my portable which I can take wherever. Just want a nice one one my bench. You can get a fluke 8010a for under 50.00 on e-bay.
