For the record, Rangedunits has a bit of a point. However he expressed it poorly. Very poorly.

Key words here are Defocused, and Trained, Experienced, Warrior. Words a person with a communications degree, and no experience in physics, tends not to understand. The media may not be so kind in a similar case. There is the possibility this would have been sensationalized.

Quoting Huey Lewis' little 80s song on journalism, "Kick em when they are up, and kick em when they're down". Something like this would have been a reporter's dream 15 minutes of fame.

In this case a trained, experienced, person took the time to assess the situation, adjusted his gear, and executed a plan.

For someone with out such prior experience, things might not have gone so well, legally, afterwords. Be sure you KNOW your target and Think, before you hit that button. The lawyers and media could eat you alive. In the OP's case, his actions are defendable. With a collimated beam, I'm not so sure a expert defense could be mounted. The defocusing was a major benefit.

I'm glad the idiot on the receiving end learned a lesson, had a few minutes of minor eye strain, and was not jailed using my tax dollars. I also glad no one got hurt. I just went through 14 miles of inner city road rage, and can understand completely. Reach for a phone folks before you reach for the collimated pointer

Sergeant, Thank You, and may God bless you, for your service to our nation.

the use of reasonable force is always permited in our country. When an un armed man approaches you in your safe car, it is reasonable to assume that you have some level of safety... If that same man approaches your car with a bat, force must be used... The key to all of this is not that he defocused it, it is that diesel stopped when the threat of imminent danger had passed.

good job on being so quick to asses the situation and leave your gun put away... I have pulled my gun out once in my life.. it wasn't fired but i still feel guilt in a weird way.

Thanks for the all the surport! I did what was necessary in this situation and we both walked away from it.. So in my book it was a success! As for LSRFAQ comment.. 'Reach for a phone folks before you reach for the collimated pointer' Did you read the story he was charging at me with a bat.. the average response time for a 911 call like this is 4-7 minutes so by the time the proper authorities could have showed up me or my car would have taken a few shots from a bat!

BUMP :bumpit: :bumpit:

In the same situation I would have done the same thing save for that I wouldn't have a gun to begin with. On the other hand I might have just fought it out with my bare hands if I didn't stop to think about what advantages I had. After reading this thread I'm going to carry an unfocused laser on hand just in case I run into a situation like this.

Lol, now we have 445 as well.... I think 445 photons are still high energy enough to make the eye fluoresce like with 405. Quite distracting.

The bat more than sufficed to create "Reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm." which is the usual standard for self-defense in most states that don't have strong "Castle Doctrine" or "Make my Day" laws.

So I would have stuck with the 1911, and with a little luck after the fall elections here in Wisconsin, I will have that option myself. (Well, it would be a HK USP40, but I digress...)

But I am glad it worked out with just the laser.

I found a nice 200mw 532nm laser pointer some time ago,... When you remove the cap there is a focusing lens that can be adjusted with a little screwdriver that transforms this laser pointer into a disruptor,... There is even a frequency control switch with 0.003khz/0.009khz mode or continous. If i have some energy and time i will post some pictures in the near future. :tired:

Awesome story, and thank you for your service. Maybe one day I'll be covering your ass with a Raven or Predator as a 15W. :)

I have a feeling my 445nm will have to be used in a similar fashion against the insane renter (and his Doberman O.O) next door to me. :|

That's a pretty cool story, lol. I used to keep one of my green pointers in my car for that same purpose. Never really had to use it for that though. Hope I didn't just jinx myself.
