I personally hate momentary switchs and pen lasers because they use AAA batteries which go off very fast... My advice still stands, of course, if anyone had tryed it and made a good review.

Just because something has a momentary switch does not mean it has to use AAA batteries (of course). If you're pointing up into the treetops for several seconds at a time, many times, it would be annoying to use a tailcap switch-style laser.

Also, a lower power laser is not going to eat through quality AAA alkalines very fast. And also, they make rechargeable batteries so you could bring a few sets of either if need be.

He's not going to be leaving the laser sit and taking beamshots, he's using it as a pointing device. Momentary is ideal.

You're right, I didn't think about that. But I still haven't see AAA rechargeable batteries with higher voltage then 1.2V:undecided:

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. I think I should look for a 5mW 532nm waterproof unit. I've been looking around, but the only one I can find, other than on ebay, is this: TD-GP-128 5mW 532nm Waterproof Green Laser Pointer: FastTech Forums . Any other suggestions?

Waterproof 5mW with momentary switch button? I think this is what are you seeking. I don't think you'll find one, but you can press the tailcap button just about half and then relase it.
P.S.: You can find the same laser on rayfoss, and I still think is better this then an momentary switch button because the msb will get broken a lot easier.

Who said anything about needing to even be AAA sized?

Not that I recommend buying lasers from DealExtreme, but this is what I'm talking about when I say momentary switch rather than tail cap switch.

Bottle Shaped 5mW 532nm Green Laser Pen Pointer with Strap (1 x CR2) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

Buy SD-220 5mW 532nm Green Laser Pointer - Black (1 x CR123A / 16340)

G301 532nm Visible Adjustable Beam Green Laser Pointer Pen + Battery Charger - Black - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

Additionally, there are tail cap switches that allow half-press for momentary on, but that is something that is not usually available in cheaper lasers. Most lasers you have to do a full click to turn on.

I like the SD-220, I've had an 301 one and you have to press very strong the msb to fire it up, plus it looks pathetic with those keys for that power.

luckycharms, there is a red 200mW laser with battery and charger for about $26.00. This could be seen at far distances in the rain forest and would be focusable. It is located at 5mW High Power Red Laser Pointer Visible Beam Daytime | eBay. If you have the time, check it out. Don't let the website title throw you off, if you look you will see it is a red 650nm 200mW laser.

Interesting way they have of advertising/listing...sort of the opposite of the flashlight's world of "eBay Lumens".

:D

The red should work better than green on leaves too, so, a great find.

Teej, yeah, they do that for legal reasons. you won't find a laser pointer on eBay over "5mW", but if you look more closely, you'll see that it is not as advertised.

Any experience with the durability at those price points?

I've gone through a lot of ~ $30 pointers, and was somewhat soured on them as far as reliability goes, but I was buying them at Staples, etc, not eBay.

:D

Buy 5 of THESE. One of them should be bright enough for people to view the beam in an overcast area. I am assuming the trees have branches and leaves that will help cut the sunlight slightly.

It will not be IR filtered but if you are only using it outside simply be careful and you won't have any issues. For many situations, yes, you should pick up safety glasses, the whole nine yards, etc. but for what you are doing this sounds like a simple fix.

What to do with the extra 4 lasers you ask? Well when your coworkers become jealous of your cool green beams, sell them for 20 bucks each and buy yourself some dinner.

Yeah. These are over spec and quite visible, but the rain forest is green and a green laser is not as easily seen in that environment as a red one would be. That was my main point. Actually he could get 4-5 of the 635nm laser pointers that are similar to the green one, but I thought he might like the advantage of a focused beam.

Infinity focus would be ideal actually. Anything different and he will have a lot more trouble seeing it as the power density is lessened.
