Folks just get one of these!!... http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3441

They work great, and it is so satisfying to see that blue spark and that pop.  I have one like that but it runs on 2aa's and i modified it with 2 capacitors from disposable cameras  .. but i think im gona have to turn it back since they dont put out enough voltage to be able shock them.. its so sad :'( now if i take a screwdriver and stick it in there thats another story, i got burn marks all on it now.

..lazer... ;D ;D ;D

Yup, I was gonna post the exact same thing! Got one of these and modded them with two photo flashes. You can really her how slow it is charging them up, but once it was ready I tried zapping a bug...nothing!
Tried shorting it with a metal contact...are you kidding me? That was a huge freakin Zap!

Besides that, I've also had the dream of having a little camera sitting somewhere, tracking the flight of a bug, and then, a small lens focuses, a huge YAG discharges, and the fly is no more...

Would probably "stain" the walls, but who cares?
Okay, my parents maybe...but it sure would be cool!

Not to mention you would have to wear IR goggles all the time....

I Know!! it was so promising hearing it charge up for 10 sec but nada.. i was so sad i thought it was broken too but when i touched a screwdirever i found it out wasnt ;D, i wonder when you put capacitors in paralel doesnt that mean the volange and value add together, like if i took that 2000v 1uf capacitor in there and put a 200v i think 220uf in paralel i would have a 2200v 223uf one? If thats the case then all may not be lost and i can just use the original circuit in it with another cap.

In paralel, I think the capacitance adds up while the voltage is divided by the numbers of caps you tie up.But I don't think its safe to put two very different ones like that.....

Well if you add them parallel, that means vour maximum voltage would be higher (if you were using two 1000V caps, you could load 2kV. But don't know about different caps). Still, the total capacitance would be the reciprocal sum (i.e. 1/(1/C1+1/C2), or if you were using a 200µF and a 500µF, you'd get 140µF. So it's not that easy.

Ah nvm, that was serial. But if you were hooking them up parallel, each cap gets the same voltage, but capacitance would add up. So in your example, total capacitance would be 223µF, but only up to 200V. Were you to charge that combined cap to 2kV, the lower one would blow.

thats not nearly as cool though. plus theyre annoying to have when friends get a hold of them

Just have to leave the big caps inside and mod them so they'd have 2 wires on the handle ;D Next time they wanna play with your toy, ZAP! That'll teach them not to touch your stuffs :D

Unfortunately, very true.
I was once at a kid's camp, and my room-mate saw it (age >20), and then went around to all the grown-ups telling them it was an electric toy guitar, they were to hold it, push the button and hit the "stings" and it would make a sound...everybody did it...

if you want to make these more fun though i would suggest turning it into a 2000V+ "dazer" thatll teach those bugs a lesson
id still rather watch a laser track them down and kill them though
