Micronta Multitester Questions

Hi everyone. I have had this multitester ever since I was a kid. I got it from Radio Shack a long time ago (instruction manual is ©1983). I've rarely used it, but I know it still works, since I tested a battery only a month ago with it.

It's a Micronta 20,000 ohms/volt folding multitester, Cat no 22-211. I won't bore anyone with the specifications since I'm not sure if it's "good enough" to use in this modern laser hobby.

Which is my question here: Is it too old or not accurate enough for what I may need it for related to lasers and the laser DIY hobby? Do I need a newer digital type?

Thanks for any insight. I'm a noob when it comes to this sort of stuff.

I'd get a new one. I don't doubt this one works perfect, but how are you gonna read the small values we deal with? I'd get the typical 6$ yellow digital multimeter which will suit you better for this ;)

Nice meter. I have quite a bit of vintage test equipment including Heathkit function generators and VTVMs, A Simpson handheld from the late 40's and a few scopes that are much older than me, all still in perfect operating condition. They complete my modern test gear perfectly.

But I agree, go on the DX site and order one of those $15 digital multimeters, it may prove invaluable for your hobbyist needs now that you're knee-deep in laser stuff! :D

Dang people!! With words like "antique" and "vintage" you're making me feel so friggin' OLD.

I got this multitester when I was in the middle school!

But thank you all for your advice. Despite this unit supposedly measuring currents up to 300mA, it does sound like it's too limited in its ranges compared to what the laser hobbies bring.

Haha, I had a Micronta as a firstie also as a gift from my granddad around that age. They work well enough, but the 20k Ohms per volt is pretty low for sensitive measurements. Look around for a FLuke 87 series, that's a meter that will last you the rest of your life. I use an 87 III almost every day

Wow. Those Fluke 87s look really nice! Although I must say I'm not liking their price tags!

Does fluke make a decent yet more affordable model, but still perfect for this hobby?

I'd like to spend some money on a decent brand, but not so much that I have to skip my electric bill. LOL.
