Quick question, I cant seem to find it anywhere...

Where do you measure the diodes? From the can diameter or the slightly larger base.
Thanks for the help

The measurement is at the base. We used mostly 5.6mm diode but 3.8mm and 9mm is also common.

Thank you soo much. You see, when I measured the can it was about 3.8mm in diameter. And the back was around 5.6mm. Yeah...

Thanks a ton!

Ah yes, I can see how that might be confusing. I think they have more formal names for the packages as laser diodes are not the only things built into these types of packages.

What are they?

TO-6?
TO-18?

TO-3 is the only diode package used for other devices, the 9mm and 5.6mm ones don't really have specific package names.

I think the 5.6mm diodes are a TO-18 package, and the 9mm ones are TO-39 or TO-5.
