On Saturday March 27, 2010, there will be another earth hour, where people are supposed to turn off their lights for an hour for environmental awareness.

Perhaps it would be a cool idea for us laser lovers to celebrate this hour in a different way: We like light, coherent, monochromatic, and lots of it. While people all over the place dim their lights, lets get our lasers running and take beamshots.

I think it would be very cool if we could synchronise the lasers coming on all over the place, and they would be especially visible if people dim their lights (some cities also dim streetlights). Perhaps we'd get some media attention in a positive way, giving away a free show instead of harassing air traffick and similar negative publicity.

Too bad nobody cares about Earth Hour around here.. The newspapers hype it all up, but when the hour comes nobody turns off the lights at all :/

I've never even heard of it, but I play with my lasers every night anyway. I'll dim the lights and keep a lookout.

Personally i don't care for earth hour either, but it sounds like a nice moment to do something in sync. Its a way to turn something rather boring into something worth seeing.

I'm not sure how many people are on this forum and willing to give it a go, but perhaps it would even be possible to see some beam in the sky from another participant you never knew lived close.

This thread is going to have some pilots getting nervous...

All planes overhead will think there is an ongoing terrorist plot that they just discovered due to the lack of city lights..

This may get interesting

I like that idea. Unfortunately I don't think people will turn off their lights here in my place because I don't remember it happening before.

I suppose pilots will be aware of the earth hour thing, especially if big corporations join and, for example, turn the lights off on their tall buildings for the occasion, making a city look different from the air if they are landmarks.

Also, its not about doing something you otherwise wouldn't do - many people here take photos of beamshots with their laser pointing in the air - its only about doing it at the same time.

I know at least one other person lives in my city, and it's a small city. :)

I think most of the members here are smart enough not to shine their lasers while an aircraft is visible.

Well last year I was in a PH apt. and you could see the difference with being an eye-shot of downtown. Though they didn't shut down the street lamps, and that ugly orange sodium halo was still hanging over the city.

As for pointing lasers into the sky, I think it may be wise to do this with 5mW's as anything greater may be a big 'no no' in many rural places... Not saying not to do it, but I wouldn't encourage people to fire class 3 & 4 lasers into the clouds..

Good idea. I am going to be on top of a hill in my town watching the lights go out.....and when the do mine is going to come on. Oh yeah baby. 650mW of 532nm goodness, maybe I'll put the beam expander on it too.

Where is your hill?

I've set up a google map, perhaps people could add their locations to it - makes it easier to find someone close by:

Laser Hour 2010 - Google Maps

You should be able to add points to that by searching for your address, if you have a google (gmail etc) account.

Ah well, not much of an event to organise ad hoc, but i'll be shining some beams around tomorrow and take some pics. Perhaps its something to ogranize properly next year - i'd love to see it on a greater scale.

I'll give it a go here too, but i wonder if there will be many buildings that go dark for the occasion, doesnt seem that big a deal in my city.

I've never seen other peoples beams here - perhaps there is noone else playing around with lasers, but even if there are, what would be the chances of looking out a window just at that time.
