I've just heard that today, Earth hour is going to happen in Croatia for the first time, which is great news to me. I hope there will be someone else here in my town who will be shining their lasers at the sky tonight.

I wish the idea would extend into one full day per month where we all spend the WHOLE day without electricity. Shut it ALL off for a day. Make coffee differently. No lights. No radio or TV. No computers or computer games. All day.

Maybe then people would step outside and actually see their neighbors. Maybe kids would go outside and play instead of sitting on their obese asses all day. Maybe we'd get used to it after a few months, and have better healthier lives because of it. I fully understand and sympathize with the Muslim world in hating the incursion of TV into their culture. TV is evil.

Shut it ALL off for a day. DO something else.

I agree with you. Only one day per month without lights, radio, TV and computer is not that hard to survive and it would be healthier.

Interestingly, such a day exists: on the indonesian island of Bali, there is a regional official holiday named Nyepi. On that thay it is not allowed to make light or noise, streetlights are turned off, and even the airport ceases operation completely.

This has nothing to do with global warming, it is a Hindu religous holiday that far predates such concepts. Even before electricity was available, it was celebrated by not making fires and such on that day.

As for earth hour in the netherlands: Not much response from laser enthousiasts, but there is quite a group of people that disagree and will perform a counter-attack of sorts: by powering up big halogen construction lights and other illumination that would normally be off. Some take part because they don't believe in global warming, others because they (imo rightfully) believe one hour doesnt make any difference, and only causes heartaches for grid operators when people participate en masse.

On Saturday March 27, 2010, there will be another earth hour, where people are supposed to turn off their lights for an hour for environmental awareness.

Perhaps it would be a cool idea for us laser lovers to celebrate this hour in a different way: We like light, coherent, monochromatic, and lots of it. While people all over the place dim their lights, lets get our lasers running and take beamshots.

I think it would be very cool if we could synchronise the lasers coming on all over the place, and they would be especially visible if people dim their lights (some cities also dim streetlights). Perhaps we'd get some media attention in a positive way, giving away a free show instead of harassing air traffick and similar negative publicity.
Did I miss where somebody posted what hour? or is it a 24 hour hour or at midnight - of course it would have to be during the night but what time? HZ:wtf:

It is 20.30 to 21.30, local time indeed. I'd suggest firing up the lasers at 21.00 and keeping them on till 21.30 for the nicest effect.

Since i'm on the 15th floor and most buildings are less tall around there, i'll be able to point several beams more or less horizontally. I'm not sure from what distance they would be observable from ground level, but we'll see if there are any comments online.

Wouldn't shining the lasers defeat the purpose of Earth hour? It's supposed to be an hour for conserving power. I think its stupid anyway ... just like protesters. In fact I think I'll turn on everything I have plugged into the wall sockets. I might even plug in my AC early

I dont think earth hour is whats in question here. Its just an excuse to have a darker night and shine lasers.

Night is night... even the moon doesn't take away that fact. Turning out all of the lights won't make the sky darker. That's just silly

Like i said it was just an excuse and idea. Have you ever heard of light pollution? It does in fact play a role in sky darkness I wish it didnt I would be able to take my telescope out in my backyard and view on every cloudless night but I cant I have to go to a darker site far away from the light dome of the city to see any good DSO's. There are actually maps designed to show you where you can get darker skies for night viewing.

Oh that's right the city. It will take a lot of earth hours to save the planet from that pollution
