A 30 W YAG laser and extreme aim, but get a electric mosquito racket as it is 80 times more effective and 100 times less expensive.

How Much Optical Power to Zap a Balloon or Bug?
The following are some findings from numerous carefully controlled and documented experiments. Translation: Fooling around when Steve had nothing better to do! Bug type and state of health (before tests) were not identified. My apologies to the SPCB (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Bugs). :)
(From Steve Roberts (osteven@akrobiz.com).)

Power to burst orange balloon with focused argon laser: 67 mW. This won't even touch a blue or green balloon.

Power to start popping all balloons within 10 feet of the laser: about 220 mW.

Power to melt a small spot in the black thermoplastic of a 3.5" diskette case: 115 mW from a 60X. But like all organics, it turns to carbon during cutting, the beam will be effectively blocked until you get into the 900 mW range.

Power to fry a bug is about 400 mW if Mr. bug is black and a cooperative target. You really gotta work at tracking the target to fry a bug as it can take minutes....

Power to fry a bug in free flight: 20 to 30 watts. This is hard to do with argon but easy with a Q-switched YAG.
I own air-cooled ion lasers up to 150 mW, water-cooled argon to 1.1 watts, water cooled krypton at 620 mW, and can substantiate these figures. Bugs are hard to kill! It takes a while to burn stuff. None of these is the instant sparks kind of burn - they are all more or less slow melts. [/quote]

I've killed small flies and mozzies with the Dilda... certainly not in flight. I couldn't tackle a beetle or something however.

I focused a 220mW Red at a small beetle once. At first it tried to scramble away but then it made a popping noise and stopped moving.

I fried some construction ants with my 1 Watt 808 the other day. Not easy to do when you can't see the beam.

I was "playing" with my dx 35 green and I saw a rat crawling on the telephone line. I pointed the laser at it and it stopped moving then it started going again. I actually felt kind bad for the little guy ,I mean he never did anything wrong. :'(

i unfocus my greenie and use it as a "perfect" flashlight to scare shit away thats annoying me like a 3foot radius at target range so it wont hurt the animal

Re:  the lowest power laser can kill the Mosq

One night I was making a video of burning stuff with my CO2 laser and a housefly landed on the board I was using as a beam stop. The fly was about 2 inches from where the beam was hitting the board - I'm sure it had no idea how much danger it was in. I hate flies and was hoping it would fly thru the beam, but no such luck....

As long as your target bug is black, 100+mw should do the job. Most of my lasers are useless on house centipedes - they are sort of translucent and pale so I have to smash them with a magazine or something....

BTW, surprisingly, my YAG really does nothing to bugs - even black ones. It doesn't have the sustained power to do any real damage - well, maybe to a gnat...
