That is very impressive! when that is developed who will need a big screen...any size screen.... TV anymore? You would just need a connection to your cable/sat box a bracket to mount it on and a bit of white wall.

Just an afterthought, it is the kind of technology that someone like sony would buy the rights too and bury it as it would kill what is a massive investment in TV's

No diodes of interest (well, there is an IR diode and maybe they're using a red diode), it's all DPSS.  Well, a weird kind of DPSS.  Later, they will be diodes, but for now it is DPSS.

So, there WILL be diodes in these things, and when diodes work and are available, laser projectors and televisions will take over.  Until there are diodes available though, all we have is DPSS, and DPSS isn't sustainable in small, portable devices with current battery technology.  The LCD projectors hanging on the ceiling will be replaced by the laser projector in your cellphone *hopefully*.  There are still a LOT of challenges though, like speckle.  Speckle will always be there, but it can make pictures look very bad, so how do you deal with laser speckle in displays?

I wonder if it would be possible to make lasers that have short enough coherency - sort of between an LED and a diode laser - just a wild-ass guess.. :-?

the lazer idea is neat because resolution is dependant on the speed of the electronics clicking on and off instead of how tiny the pixels can be made.

if they can make them in 1080p i'd buy one regardless of size.

i'm in support of projection stuff, my rear projection sony looks insanely good compared to anything else high def

wow i can't wait to get one of these in a phone or as a tv. The quality looked pretty amazing and you can pic your screen size.

As far as recent news, well, there hasn't been much. I think they may be selling the things like in the video, but there still aren't any green direct-injection diodes available. Once the diodes are available and get good enough to be mass-produced, then it'll move fast. But getting to that point takes a while.

For reference, I believe the first direct-injection violet laser diodes was made in the mid 1990s, but then how long was ti before Blu-Ray and HD-DVD came out? roughly 10 years? It took a long time to go from the first working prototypes into mass-manufacturable devices, and there's not even a working device out there yet.

But it'll be awesome when it ever gets here.

I think this is really going to take off once the right people hear about it. Its a great concept and there so much that it can be used for.

It is going to take a while to get it mass produced, but I think it will get done faster then some of the technology we have now.

Yea this isn't the first time I've seen this microvision display. It was also discussed a few months ago on <alt.lasers>

Conceptually it's a raster display, like an old school CRT monitor. Except I'd say microvision perfects the concept. CRT monitor uses electron guns + phosphors. Not very portable.

I think it's an excellent idea, and once diode laser tech. matures these displays will sell.

Raster displays have the advantage of easily being able to change resolution(s) (pixel size) and viewing area, the drawback is if the refresh rate is too slow (< 60 Hz) the display will flicker. I still think CRT displays are best for video games cuz of the lack of pixel smearing and black level. There's also the advantage of not having to manufacture every individual pixel in the display, and never having to worry about dead pixels.

LCD displays will always have their uses too, I think they are best for viewing text.

This was shown over a year ago but it seems a little more refined now.

How about 3D ;D
