It's impossible to pop a perfect white balloon using any wavelength in the visible spectrum...

Of course, that's a "perfect" balloon.[/quote]

That's really interesting, actually. Why is this?

It's because white doesn't absorb nearly as much energy as other colors (and black. :p). IE, if you shine a laser at a white wall, it will appear brighter than if you shine it at a black wall.

But surely you'd need a PERFECT white surface, with no blemishes down to the most miniscule of scales wouldn't you? Would a white balloon withstand say 100W?

A CO[sub]2[/sub] laser should definitely do the trick. Otherwise, assuming that the balloon does not have a perfect reflectivity, any laser with sufficient power could do pop it - we're talking about those in the kW range. You could also use a Sharpie to make the job easier. :p

if its "white" in visible spectrum a co2 would do the trick because its mid/near IR quite far from the visible freq

or use a maser...

Ok so I was checking out the Wicked Lasers site to see how many scams and total BS they had and look at this!

http://www.wickedlasers.com/lasers/WL_Balloons_50_pcs-63-11.html

Are you freaking kiding me, like im going to pay 9.99 + 20$ shiping for 50 black balloons that say Wicked Lasers on theme!

I seen a video on youtube of theme are their not even that blackish and they say to throw away that black marker but Sharpie colored balloons are actualy darker than theirs. Next I went to the dolar store and go myself 2 packs of 30 for 1$ each, so the total is 1.50$ of gas for the car, 2.30$ for 60 balloons that are darker than those "special" Wicked ones.

When I first got into this hobby, before I knew better, I bought a Nexus 95. Along with it, I bought some black balloons. The Nexus actually puts out what it is supposed to! Way over priced though.

About the balloons. They are CRAP. I'll tell you what is 'special' about them. They are very 'thin'. So they pop easier. This makes them lighter in color when you blow them up though. Sometimes, they will pop just trying to blow them up!
Since then, I have bought some black ballons from a party supply place for a fraction of the price...and triple the quality.

I buy packages of black balloons at my local dollar store. 1/4 a pound of them for $1.00.

A CO[sub]2[/sub] laser should pop just about any balloon. But I've been wondering about CO[sub]2[/sub] lasers.....their wavelength is pretty much in the heatwaves range....So would a good thermal insulator reflect the most of a CO[sub]2[/sub] laser beam? :-/ Or not because thermal insulators aren't used when in the case when heat transfer is done through radiation? Or is everything I just said BS? :-/

and this is just silly ;D

Or you can use a Techlasers Infiniti 15mW....that looks like would pop just about any color balloon.[insert you know what video here :D youtube doesn't load for me right now...]

all he's saying is IF an object could reflect all the energy placed upon it ("perfect" white), it would not absorb any energy (pop).

Close. Convective and conductive heat insulators all involve substances that trap air while Radiative heat insulators include substances like foils (aluminum, tin).

Oh, that's why aluminum foil gloves are a good idea, if you don't mind reflections :D I guess a thermal camera should be able to see the beam of a CO[sub]2[/sub] laser, to bad their always in the thousands of dollars :-/

But anyway, like I said, this laser can pop any conventional balloon, no matter the color :D

A lower powered (20W) one can be made for less than a grand.
I know, but I was talking about thermal cameras. There are some really bulky first gen ones for about $200 on ebay, but they require a lot of power for cooling and stuff....

Ok hold it! Whats with the hijacking of this thread?

This is here to talk about how much Wicked Lasers is BS not about non reflective balloons and CO2 lasers, ect...

Let's try to stay on topic here. ;)
