hi, im new to the forum and lasers but looking for a laser with limitless duty cycle. i would like to keep it on for hours if possible

i found this

400mW 635nm Red laser Industrial Module /Focusable [OL-635-400] - $132.99 : Zen Cart!, The Art of E-commerce

and this

500mW Red laser module/TTL and Analog modulation [OL-650M-500] - $199.99 : Zen Cart!, The Art of E-commerce

at o-like. there s not much specs on the 400mW, but i can see they both have fans attached to them and i wonder if the 400mW might do the job. it does say it has <10 mins preheat time, but nothing about duty cycle..
the 500mW is supposed to turn on and off by itself when it gets too hot and could be a good second solution if limitless is too much to ask.

anybody have any experience with these particular ones, or lasers with fans attached to them?

thankful for any help on this matter! :yh:

You didn't get your answers from that Necro-Thread?
If you wanna keep it on for hours get a labby. Active cooling will keep it from overheating, and it plugs into the wall so you can have it on for hours with no batteries dying.

thanks,
im not really sure what exactly a labby is though (my english isnt 100% fluent).
the cooling from a fan is not the same as active cooling?

Get something that plugs into the wall instead of being powered by batteries. Something that won't roll off the table.

For what do you plan on using it?

I see now that the item you linked is in fact a labby. So it SHOULD have an infinite duty cycle

ok,
when taking a closer look at the pics of my suggestions
i first now understand these run on batteries!

im planning on using it for a light installation in the ceiling of a nightclub, noone will be able to stare directly into the beam or touch it, but a 400/500mW could perhaps be a bit strong for the job?
any idea on where to get something like this to plug into the wall, or what i need to make this plug into the wall?

many thanks!

A "labby" is a rectanguar module that has good heatsinking and the power source is from the wall, the two items you are looking at are labbies :)
also make sure you know what you are buying and what you want... do you need ttl? if you dont need it or dont know what it is find a different one. also what is it needed for

EDIT-sorry had this typed up for a while...ok so for a nightclub huh? well do you want it to "dance" or just sit there? and 500 is a bit too much... most are 50mw i believe so maybe just search for laser light show or something, this sight may interest you http://www.eelight.com/ and those dont need batteries they are labbies BTW for your links and mine (unless stated)
also looks like fast shipping but i dont know where you live. and reviews look good! :)

Depends of the dimensions of the club and how are you going to modulate it. Difracting, scanners?. Tell us.

400-500mw of a 635nm sounds a bit too strong

This one looks good and it has TTL modulation so you can make it dance to the music with a few other components add in :)

yes i asked him about the ttl but did not specify.. so do you need TTL?
if not, i believe it would take money away from your price... and again why not check out this site right here. Laser Light show ,DJ laser Light |Green Red Blue Purple RGB Laser Light -DJ Equipment Store
looks like it is reputable and has fast shipping from reviews. but we dont know what country you are in.

EDIT-we also dont know the amt. of $$$ your willing to spend, im guessing around $100 from your links but idk

Considering you have no experience with lasers, for you to be setting up your own lasers for a nightclub sounds like an accident waiting to happen IMO. Even without people staring directly into the beam, eye damage can result from diffuse reflections.

If you are interested in putting lasers in a public club setting I suggest you do A LOT more reading on laser safety in a public setting. In the end the safest thing for you to do is purchase a pre made xy laser scanner or something similar. Just my .02¢

im getting the 200mW even though i havent played around with lasers too much. getting goggles as well of course for the set up, and will fasten it close to the ceiling out of reach of anyone to touch/stare into beam, and making sure it can't move/fall down!

the TTL will probably be a bit over the top for my first project, but might come in handy for future projects:)

thanks for your tip everyone, now looking forward to seeing this thing operate :gj:

People can still suffer eye damage without looking into a beam, for example if you stare at the spot where a 200mW laser is hitting a wall you can do eye damage.
I don't like recommending people to risk there eye sight but in this case it may preserve the eye sight of innocent 3rd parties. When you purchase this 200mW laser turn it on and point it at a wall, then look at it, you'll notice it hurts your eyes.

Using a 200mW laser in a public setting without any prior experience with even a pre produced laser projector. :banghead:
