Lens Question about FastTech 1W Laser

Hello, this is my first post!

So, I was looking to get this laser as my first step up https://www.fasttech.com/reviews/1443100/32434 to a real burning laser. However, appearently the lens is made of plastic and can melt, having its fumes harm th diode. It uses an "M140" diode, and I want to avoid this possibility.

I've been told to change the lens to a 3 Element Glass lens, or a G2 lens. I don't know where I could get these lenses neither do I know how to install them. If someone could enlighten me (pun intended) as to how to change out the lens on a laser, and wheter I should go with the 3 Element Glass or G2, and most importantly where to get them, I would REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks so much!

To be honest you should start out with something a bit smaller first, and work your way up. I for one also don't think anyone should tell you that information unless you confirm you have safety glasses.

Markus, that laser I believe is similar to the Thor laser that another member here did a review on. Please read this: http://laserpointerforums.com/f52/ebay-thor-laser-93771.html

The laser is certainly powerful, but it is hindered by the acrylic optics that it shines through. 1W lasers and plastic/acrylic don't play nice together.

While potentially not as attractive, I purchased an $80 dollar 1W laser through ebay that was pretty decent. I made a post about it here: http://laserpointerforums.com/f40/450nm-ebay-laser-93838.html

Hi, I currently have a 200mW green laser so I am making a somewhat gradual step up. Also, I have an eagle pair of safety glasses since I don't want to risk my vision at the cost of a few dollars.

From what I understand it is possible to change out the acrylic lens for a G2 or Three element glass, as said by later phase, but I just dont know how to do it.

I'm sure it can be done, but why spend money on a laser that you know has poor quality optics? Good luck Markus :)

Markus, this is a very global forum, please fill in more info in your profile, especially your location so it shows under your name before you ask where to buy something.

The top should simply screw off, and then you can screw in a new lens. Shouldn't be difficult by any means, although it should be noted there are better deals for your money. Check out SciFiLasers (owned by a forum member) and LaserBTB (chinese company, very reputable though, and excellent quality). I would personally avoid random stuff from chinese sites (with the exception being LaserBTB of course :)).

Wow, that laser you linked me to looks fantastic, particularly the 2W plus version, it has me drooling. The only reason I liked the look of the Fast tech one was the nice case, and the host which I really liked since it looked like the WL Spyder series.

But this laser here comes with good quality optics, and is more reputable so it is likely what I am going to go for.
