Hows it going everybody? I just made my account today, and im planning on ordering my first greenie tomorrow. I first came to this hobby thru a PopSci mag i was reading when i saw an add for wicked lasers.com Since then, i have researched, dragon lasers, and nova lasers. As of right now i am pretty confident im going to purchase the x45 from them. Any one have any last min advice/recomendations? Thanks, and good to meet you all.

The beam will be very visible, but don't expect it to burn very much, since it's between 45 and 65mw. It should pop balloons, though. ;D

I really think you should spend an extra $20 and get an x65, and if you can get an x85. You will regret it later when you don't get the extra power.

Thanks to everyone so far. Can anyone touch on the topic of contact with bare skin? is there a stinging sensation with 45-85? this is another thing that i want to account for.

if you sharpie a dot on your skin
x45-85 will sting
if you dont, unless your skin is relatively dark, the x45 shouldnt sting

Unless your skin is black or painted black your not going to feel anything with the x45. Now as you reach upwards to the x85 you will feel it if your skin is black or painted black. but not a lot. it's not until you get into the 150mw range that you can really feel it sting quickly on your skin. I've got a 130mw laser that stings but it takes a few seconds.
Hope that helps. I to recommend going with a higher powered on if you have the cash.

do any/most of you have a laser that you carry around regularly? That is something that i am also taking into consideration. Once again, thanks so much for the help and patience

Oh, this is something that i would be able to bring to astronomy class and star parties, yeah? (x45-85)

Jason - anything, 5mw or above in the 532nm range will be GREAT for star pointing ! Some of the higher powered ones may screw up your night vision, so if it is for astronomy, you may want to stick to the lower powered ones. For thermal experiments, burning things, popping balloons, etc - you will want a 50mw or better if you do not want to have to use an external lens of some sort. Welcome to the forum !

Don't use anything higher than 30mw for star parties or astronomy. Otherwise, people might complain since you might mess us their night vision.

actually i have really pale skin, and my X-85 (90mW) and 112mW CNI can both sting me...takes a second or two though.

I got a ~40mw for my first one, and I just wanted more power.

I'd say get the x65-x85.

If you still want more power after that, get a red burner, they have a much cheaper money to power ratio.

CXrazy: can you explain what you would have liked that extra power for? What did you want to use the 40mw for to begin with? thanks so much.
