Lasers are used on all sorts of tools, mainly construction, but many more as well. Using lasers as a smoke detector is a great characteristic of lasers IMO, but how it would be used solely as such probably wouldn't ever be marketed, but who knows!?

Just messing around with google, came across this site http://www.lasertoolsco.com/page_loader.php?p_id=45 kinda interesting!

I've personally used lasers to detect smoke myself, in a very similar situation and other situations too

I guess only us enthusiasts would think of using a laser in such a scenario because they're always on our mind as it is! ;D
