Lasers and clouds dangers?

Hello, i cannot really find anything about this but to me it seems like something important for everyone and specially people who are new to lasers to know

If you shine a laser that can hit clouds at clouds does that mean it goes through the clouds?
I guess that it does since in fog and smoke it also just goes straight trhough

But doesn't that mean that the laser could hit anything that is in or above the clouds? like an aircraft?

It only seems logical to think that this can happen
I do not know the correct answers but i think i am right about this or am i?
I hope to start a discussion about the subject that could lead to an interesting thread with good information about this subject so that everyone can read this and know the dangers.

I might be wrong, but im thinking that maybe clouds (if thick enough) may just diffuse the coherent light. Kind of how if you shine your laser into the sky when it is really foggy and the beam blurs out the farther you shine it.

I don't really know this is just personal experience. iF someone has a better answer please explain. I guess im wondering too.

Yes it will, unless the cloud cover is thick. Normally when you shine a laser in a clear night that laser beam will travel forever out into space. With clouds the laser light gets diffused a bit but most will go through (ex: foggy and rainy days). Now if you're trying the shine it through a thunderhead then you're going to end up with a giant patch of green or blue or red or whatever laser you're using, but the laser won't go through easily

So if a laser is powerful enough and the clouds thin enough it will go through and be able to hit a plane that is above the clouds?

In that case wouldn't it be a good idea to have that posted in a sticky about laser safety?

Clouds will scatter the beam so the power will be reduce quite a bit, unless it is a strong laser and a very thin cloud. Red will have a lot more cloud penetration than blue with the same power.

Yes it is possible. However, remember that a plane's windows are on the sides and top of the plane... not the bottom :p

Very interesting thread and awesome pics of the beam hitting the clouds
i will try that too as soon as i can charge my batteries ^^ still waiting for the charger to arive..

But to sum it up...

It is possible to hit whatever is above the clouds given that the clouds are not to thick and the laser is very powerful?

So i will ask again... shouldn't that information be placed in a sticky thread about laser safety? i'd hate to one day wake up and find out someone accidentilly hit a aircraft while shining on the clouds with a powerful laser

Yes theoretically you should be able to. However, it will be quite clear to aircraft because they will be rapidly approaching and passing a patch of green or red or blue haha and you almost cannot hit the windows of an aircraft by shining your laser *up*. You can only easily hit the windows of aircraft by standing near runways and pointing the laser at landing planes

So it should be save to point a high powered laser at the clouds even if some of the light gets through and could accidentily hit an aricraft?

Too many variables to say "yes you can point strait up at clouds and be 100% safe for aircraft". Just only do it when there is a solid cloud deck and you should be ok, also learn where the fight paths are for airliners in your area.

it's a pretty busy sky here since i live close to an airport but whenever i see or hear a plane i don't shine my laser anywhere in the sky
Also for the flight paths it's kinbda hard to figure that out since most aircraft to not appear on the internet website that shows all comercial air traffic in holland
this is because most are unmarked military aircraft from NATO leaving long trails which some believe to be chemtrails(i am also a believer in this)

There is a site that shows each and every comercial aircraft and flight rout but non of the planes that leave such a trail appear on this site..
