Laser saves dogs from Coyote

I took my two miniture daschunds out this morning to do "their business". We have a large yard (over an acre) with lots of trees and backed by a hill on one side and a field on the other. I was standing just outside our front door and the dogs were about 3o yards away down by the trees just walking around. It was still a bit dark. Off to the side I saw something moving. It was a coyote sneeking up on our dogs aboat 15 ft from them (it's happened before). I pulled out my 445nm laser and let him have it. :gun: It really freaked him out. He took off headed for the field. By this time the dogs also saw him and wouldn't you know it - they started to chase him - dumb dogs. I finally got them back. The coyote was standing in the middle of the field just watching me. I illuminated him again and he took off like a bullet - did not like it. It obviously did not blind him, but he certainly did not like it. It proved to be very effective.

nice, there are not many "real world" problems solved by lasers

Just to be sure: you didnt happen to shine into the coyotes face/eyes, did you?

WOW, thats really scary. I'm glad you and the little guys made it out alright. I wonder if different wavelengths have different effects on them.

@Krutz No shit he shot it in the coyotes face. I would have done the same thing. I'm sure if he shot it in the tail his dogs would be mauled right now.

Although I wouldn't be happy about shining lasers in animals faces and possibly causing harm in this instance I think it's a necessary evil to prevent his dogs from being attacked and possibly killed.

Nice to hear it turned out well and niether you nor your dogs were harmed, and you lucked out with the laser.

In the future invest in a shotgun or a good rifle, its much more effective and is the right tool for the job. I would much rather trust my life to a gun then a laser. (unless said laser can slice through a tree instantly.. then I might reconsider

).

I would be weary about using a shotgun (unless using slugs) around dogs, but the rifle would probably work well if your in an area that permits the usage of guns.

At that distance I doubt very much if you could blind a moving critter but it sure will disturb them enough to make em run

Well, here where I live Cayotes are classified as pest animals, which means I can kill as many of them as I wish on my property.

rifle wise, anything higher then a .22 would usually suffice (although Id recommend something of larger caliber or as stated, a shotgun). and these guns can be bought with a non-restricted gun licence. (as are some most shotguns IIRC).

22-250s are a favorite among coyote hunters, but in low light and in such close proximity involving domestic dogs, I would refrain from using any sort of bolt rifle on them unless your using a semiauto. Shotgun might be best for spread.

Right now I got a Ruger SR-22. its a fairly nice machine, but I would still rather a shotgun with slugs. (which is nice too, since that shotgun is semi-auto as well).

But I would agree that you need to watch your dogs so they don't become unintentional targets themselves.

I have chased bears away from the garbage at a resort in June Lake, the resort manager sure thought it was a great idea, as this was effective and didn't need to be aimed close to the animals to be effective. The bears headed up the mountain like their buts were on fire w/ a green 15mW pen. Didn't see them again while on vacation that week.
