Laser Problem from a Newbie - low power short range laser app

Hi

I am new and have a question that perhaps some laser guru can help out with.

I need a very small and minimally divergent beam, preferably IR, transmitted via a single fiber, to remain virtually non divergent from 0 to 6 inches from the end of the fiber.

I am working in a very small space and cannot afford much room for hardware on the end of the fiber, I was originally hoping to just use the tip of the fiber but after attempting this with a cheap laser pointer, can see that the beam diffuses radically as it is moved away from the subject.

Hoping someone can suggest an off the shelf solution or at least point me in the direction of components to do this.

I imagine I don't need a lot of power to cover this range, (0 to 6 inches) so wish to save costs with a minimal source.

P.S In this application, smallness is critical, the entire laser device needs to be less than one inch or preferably smaller. Low cost of course is always important.

It is easy to edit or add to recent post by using the

IIRC you can use a ball lens at the end of a fiber
cable to collimate the output.
