hi L P H ..........im jay im from the uk im new to lasers have been doing some research in my spear time still lots to do mind u.....always been interested in taking things apart and well trying to put them back together since I was a child.....now mainly build computers and tinkering with engines bikes ect......anyways long story short been watching some awesome vids on yt of u guys making lasers in different ways diff diodes ect and some pretty impressive builds....anyways one I do want to try and build is the lighter laser as prob a lot of u have seen on yt....I think its quite impressive and will be a good gadget to add to my collections........rite so I see he is using a m 140 diode and a fmt driver board 1.7a .....but disassembles diode if im rite?....im after a 2 to 3w diode and driver board to run it....and the rite batterys and charger to go with it....if u have watched the video u mite get a better picture of what im on about as im still new to this.....it doesn't have to be a m140 diode just one that is already wired and ready to solder......sorry if im sounding confusing lol but ant help pointing in the rite direction would be awesome....thanks jay....

I have seen some of those where the builder makes what was and still looks like a regular cigarette lighter only a laser shoots out in place of a flame.

I could not think of a better way to accidently blind yourself or allow some innocent person to pick up your lighter to light their cancer stick and fire a laser into their eye, I'm sorry but it is a terrible idea and a dangerous object to create.

I'm sorry to poo poo your idea, and there is one worse, someone could put a laser in an eye drops bottle, that would be more dangerous, but not by all that much. Again I'm sorry to have to say, its a very bad idea.

I'm glad that you understand laser safety, that's great.

Keeping it put away is important because it looks harmless, but it could easily be mistaken for what it looks like, a tool that a person holds inches from their eyes, that's what makes it more dangerous than a torch.

Oh and be sure there's no airplane or helicopters overhead when you light your cigarette. ;)

I'm still trying to catch my breath back, laughing so hard from this one!

is tru tho what he saying I did laff meself

Is a profoundly stupid and very dangerous idea, a 2W to 3W laser lighter.

Just go to JetLasers and buy a decent laser with respectable run time---if you are obsessed with lighting a cigarette with it, you still can.

A friend built a laser lighter but you had to insert the tip of the cancer stick into the lighter. The end had a hole at an angle of about 80° and acted as a beam dump and there was no way to be harmed by the beam. There was a contact on the side of the hole also that would only allow the laser to lase when a cancer stick was inserted.

People are obviously reading your post, that's why they're replying and adding onto the idea.

Regardless whether you're going to use it to light a cigarette or not, a lighter with a very high powered laser has a large potential for eye damage, as it will reflect light off of the surface of what you want to light. All we're saying is you're better off just creating a portable laser with a good host rather than trying to make something that will relieve someone from their gift of sight.

Nobody has called you a child, not sure where you got that from.

I understand where you are coming from completely and the idea of what you originally were discussing in this thread. However, as you have already seen, you will usually always get a safety first response from the veterans here. For those of us who have been in this hobby for a long time decades in some cases, like myself, safety first is the creed we live by in regards to lasers. We understand the serious dangers that Class 4 lasers present and regard them with the same caution and concern as you would with a firearm. There is ever more heat coming down on our hobby as of late with reckless morons lasing airplanes and in some cases causing eye injuries to others on the ground through reckless behavior, so we are even more inclined to increase the safety awareness of others and being conscientious stewards of our hobby.

I have built lasers in a lot of different things but I keep them in cases and there's only my wife and I so they are out of site and there's no-one to mess with them anyways.
Building one into a lighter is pretty cool IF you are not going to actually use it near your face and there's no chance of anyone else getting their hands on it. I would NEVER put any laser near my face or anyone else for that matter. It's a huge safety issue but that doesn't mean you cant build all kinds of great stuff so happy building:)

I'm actually considering getting a safe or something similar for my handheld lasers. Someone recently broke into my fathers house and stole the 301 pointer that I gave him. The thief's probably aren't intelligent enough to realize that the laser is capable of blinding themselves or someone else. At any rate, they don't have a charger for the batteries so it probably won't last long, hopefully it dies before they have a chance to harm someone. If they harm themselves then tough luck, they shouldn't have been stealing.
