To all:
His DIY videos are simple and rudimentary, that's what makes him so popular. If the project involved IR sensors, PIC micro controllers, and MIDI, noobs will be intimidated.

Thanks for clearing that up for all of us.. ;D ;D ;D

Now seriously, no, I've never seen a laser harp DIY on LPF. If you make one don't forget to post it here! I'd like to see a DIY tutorial ;)

HAHAHA that was funny =D
right after the last picture.......
BAM!!
"Now seriously, etc..."
HAHAH!!

but anyway, ya i saw it in the same magazine and was IN SHOCK!! haha
i would try to build one but im not as experience. ha to bad

Uhm ..... if i recall correctly, the pro version of this instrument read the image of the hand that intersect the beam (or if you prefer it simple, the reflex of the beam on your hand when you intersect the beam), in scanning cycles, and also varies intensity when the reflex is near the reading sensor, and decrease it when it's far, but i'm not completely sure if this part can be done just with a simple theremin circuit on the base that cover the beam emitters .....

So, you can do the same thing both with more emitters (turning on them in cycles and reading if there's a reflex when the correspondent module is on), or with a scanner, shifting the beam in a position, reading, shifting again, reading, and so on, in a cycle (this for read the notes, for the intensity, or you use a program that calculate the reflex intensity compared with all the others and with a sample one, or a capacitive sensor like the theremin one)

But still remain the pc interface, that is not so easy to DIY ..... and also worse, if you want to build it non-pc based, like the analog prototypes :p :D :wtf:

Hi,

I just started building the circuits for a Laser Harp. Has anyone here ever built one?

KK

yup :)

senior design project a few months ago. used a FPGA to do a digital to MIDI computation to output digital MIDI sounds. had to use lots of ADC microcontroller pics as well.

Never built one but would like to make one someday.
How many lasers will you be using in your design ?
Did you design the photosensors yourself or copy an existing design?

Will you be using the photosensors to trigger preset tone generators or run it through a computer so you can reprogram tones and scales under PC control ?

Sounds like fun.

What type of sensor array you are planning to build ? ..... reflection or interruption ?

The easiest one, but that require a "top" part that hold the photosensors, is the interruption system, with this you act like normall photobarriers interrupting the beams, and the rest of the work is made from the audio process part (pre-programmed attack, sustain, decay, pitch, shift, and so on) ..... the beams acts only as switches, basically.

With the reflection type, you can control also some of the effects, moving your hands up and down, but both the mechanical and electronic parts are more complex to build, and the final alignment of all the beams and detectors is a pain you-know-where :D ..... it work more or less as in the attacked draw (i drawed only one beam, just for the idea)
