The safety glasses are for working on the laser, or using it in a projector and aligning things and such. Also it can be useful when testing laser shows standing where the audience would be to ensure the beams never hit you.

Viewing beams through protective glasses is fairly pointless, but once a set up as been configured such that it can never hit you in the eye, the glasses can come off and you can enjoy the show.

Protective glasses are also very useful when doing experiments like popping balloons, lighting cigarettes, cutting material and such. When playing with lasers indoors they also protect from harmful reflections from windows and such. If you go outside and shine a laser into the air you obviously don't need glasses to enjoy the view, unless random disco balls hover around ;)

Viewing the beam without glasses is safe if you know to do it safely. I view my lasers all the time without glasses but there must be no chance of an accident, am a little paranoid of the possibility of an accident because one once slipped out of my hand, so I have been more careful since then. I use glasses when looking at the dot up close, when burning stuff, when using my LPM, or if doing something with mirrors and or glass at least until it's set up right. I won't go waving it around with mirrors and glass all over the place. Just be careful, especially with a 405nm that doesn't look like much, and be aware of any fire hazard.

I use my goggles when working on the laser or whenever I am using it up close. Usually, I take off the goggles to marvel at the beam, but I make sure there are no reflective surfaces around first.

That makes us feel better as im sure you are also keeping an eye on it if it were to eventually burn through. Is the coating something like they use on pickup trucks bed?

Kinda seems you stumbled on to something good as a back stop but time will tell?
