First of all I wanted to state that I did NOT do kipkay's laser hack because of the fact that it kills the diode.

Yes, I did say it kills the diode. What happens is without a driver, a laser diode has no limited current.

The bad thing is is that when an LD draws current, it begins to heat up, causing it to draw current, causing it to heat up and BOOM the diode is blown.

I'm pretty sure KK knows this by now and only keeps the video up for the publicity. He knows that the people will be disappointed within a week of doing his "hack".

I believe he should remove the video immediately due to the many people waisting their money to build one.

So DO NOT do his hack incase you want a dead diode.

Ignorance is bliss. I think everyone here is pretty aware of Kipkays "hacks" and how non-functional they are. Sometimes all you need is the publicity, regardless of the product they "advertise".

This is an unnecessary post.
This topic has been covered many times in the past.

I haven't tried any of KipKay's "hacks" personally, but they do seem to work well to an extent... Otherwise they wouldn't work in the videos.

These laser builds are by no means "professional" laser devices.
But this does not mean KipKay is a scammer or liar.
He is providing a simple way to build something cool at low cost for those that are not serious about the hobby. There is nothing wrong with that.

Take it easy on him. You don't need to slam his work just because he doesn't use a driver.

agree.i made the mini maglite and it was working for 3-4 months very well, but somehow the pin of the diode cut.i'm sure it will be working until now.

Momo, just a short while ago you arrived here completely clueless and now you try to pretend you're the big know-it-all. Not a good move.

Of course a laser diode (any diode) has a limited current. This can be seen from the fact that in a U/I-diagram, the curve isn't vertical after reaching the threshold voltage. For example, running an LPC-815 off a 3V source is perfectly workable. The current will be around 300mA.

That thing about "thermal runaway" is probably an urban myth. If not, I'd like to ask you to provide an example, with verifiable figures, to show you're not just parroting something you've read but know what you are talking about.

Yes, I do know that dr-ebert. I did just stumble across LPF and now I love it here.
I am sorry for this post.I didn't realize that people have posted this before.I just wanted the newcomers to know about this.

Blue lasers, really? That's pretty cool.4 months and it working fine? You must use it pretty lightly.

And no I'm not calling Kipkay a liar or scammer. He's a great guy.Yes, he is providing something cheap and cool. Actually, I bet if you added sometype of heatsink and light use you could keep it running for about a month.

Kipkay, I hope if you are reading this there are no hard feelings between us.You're awsome and do a ton of great things.I just don't like this one.

Thank all of you for helping me here at LPF.Everyone here is a great bunch of people.

Thanks again,
Logan
